Job Description Summary
The Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for performing a variety of laboratory tests and procedures to help diagnose, treat, and prevent disease. This includes collecting and processing specimens, operating laboratory equipment, and recording accurate test results. The technician also ensures quality control and supports proper documentation in compliance with hospital and laboratory policies.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

Laboratory Testing & Equipment Operation
Receive test orders, gather specimens, and perform testing using the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
Operate laboratory instruments such as automated analyzers, centrifuges, and microscopes.
Accurately document and record results following standard policies and procedures.
Troubleshoot and resolve equipment issues when possible. Report unresolved problems to the supervisor and document equipment failures.
Print and review tech logs, sign off on work performed, and submit logs to supervisor or charge personnel.
Blood Donor Screening & Sample Preparation
Screen and draw blood from donors in accordance with established procedures.
Review donor information and records to ensure accuracy.
Prepare and label donor samples for testing, including chemistry and serology tests.
Record test results in the LIS and/or appropriate logs, work cards, and request forms.
Technical Oversight & Specimen Handling
Provide technical guidance and ensure lab policies and procedures are followed by lab staff.
Collect blood specimens with proper patient identification and minimal needle sticks.
Label specimens accurately with tech code and time of collection.
Process specimens, including printing worksheets and labeling cups with accession numbers.
Run pending logs or HRP logs to track outstanding tests and handle results appropriately.
Perform and document quality control checks as per lab policy.
Carry out other duties as assigned to support lab operations.
Additional Job Description

Education:

Must have an Associate’s Degree in Medical Lab Technology from an approved school. Certification as a MLT (ASCP) is required. (In the state of SC, there is no requirement to renew.)

(Infrequent) Ability to exert up to 50 lbs. of force. (Frequent) Examples include: To transfer a 100 lb. patient that can not assist in the transfer requires 50 lbs. of force. For every 100 additional pounds, assistance will be required from another healthcare worker. 20 lbs. of force is needed to push a 400 lb. patient in a wheelchair on carpet. 25 lbs. of force is required to push a stretcher with a patient with one hand. Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes. (Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance. (Continuous) Ability to match or discriminate between colors. (Continuous) Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception.
