Employee is responsible for performing a variety of routine laboratory procedures, including quality control, processing, and testing of lab results in departments where training has been completed.

Essential Functions:
Testing:

Performs processes associated with analytical testing of patient samples. Performs quality control testing to assure accuracy of patient testing. Performs equipment maintenance and troubleshooting. Performs competency and proficiency testing to assure maintenance of skills.

Documentation:

Maintains required documentation for all lab procedures. Processes requisitions for testing. Prepares and distributes reports.

Education:

Successfully completes educational activities to continually improve skills and assists consultants. Practices safety policies to maintain a safe working environment. Performs all duties to satisfy regulations in preparation for inspections.

Customer Support:

Provides information and consultation to requestors. Recognizes and promotes interdependencies with other areas.

Operations Management:

Practices efficient use of supplies and materials. Participates in inventory of supplies and materials.

Strategic Planning:

Participates in improvement of methods and processes.

Teamwork and Communication:

Work within a team to achieve patient and team goals. Share and initiate regular and professional communication with co-workers. Participate in regular staff meetings.

Operational:

Employee must possess sufficient motor skill and manual dexterity to obtain and manipulate specimens in a manner that does not endanger themselves and others.

Qualifications:
Required:

High School or GED Enrolled in or completion of program as a medical laboratory scientist or as a medical laboratory technician from a recognized college or university. Eligible for Baccalaureate Degree or Associate Degree as an MLS or MLT at end of term. Eligible for Certification by ASCP or equivalent agency upon graduation.

Experience:
Required:

Successful completion of clinical rotation of training in specific sections of the laboratory. Refer to the Life Support Training Policy

NH-HR-3096.

Knowledge of current medical terminology to perform full range of laboratory tests. Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing to perform quality control checks and troubleshooting of instrumentation. Knowledge of medical terminology to communicate with medical staff regarding laboratory procedures and results. Skill in performing a full range of laboratory tests. Skill in anticipating and reacting calmly to emergency situations. Skill in developing and maintaining department quality assurance. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, hospital staff and the public. Ability to read and understand information about instrumentation in laboratory field. Ability to follow written protocols. Ability to work independently. Ability to communicate clearly.
