Responsible for compliance of the entire lab to include QA and COLArequirements and guidelines. Seek compliance with appropriatehealth and safety regulatory agencies. To procure and processpatient specimens for laboratory testing, perform tests accuratelyin a timely fashion, accurately report test results, detecting andmanaging basic problems as they occur.

Minimum Qualifications Minimum Education:

Two-year diploma in Medical Laboratory Science,biological science or chemistry from a national or internationalaccredited educational institution. Transcript must include aminimum of 60 semester hours with 25 hours of coursework inclinical laboratory science, chemical and biological sciencerequired. Must include a clinical laboratory rotation inimmunohematology, chemistry, hematology and microbiology.

Minimum Years of Experience:

3 Years of clinical laboratoryexperience in an accredited clinical laboratory. Substitutable Education & Experience (Optional): None.

Required Certifications/Licensure:

Medical Laboratory Technician(MLT) certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologist(ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC) or an equivalent state orgovernmental certification from one of the following: NationalCredentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA); AmericanMedical Technologies (AMT) ; American Association of BioanalystsBoard of Registry (AAB) National certification may be at the medical laboratory science(MLS) level or a categorical certification in a recognizeddiscipline of clinical laboratory science (i.e., chemistry,hematology, blood bank, microbiology). With a categoricalcertification, the employee’s practice at LMC will be limited tothe category or categories listed by the certifying board. MedicalLaboratory Technician (MLT) Certification from the American Societyof Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC) or anequivalent state or governmental certification.

Required Training:

None. Essential Functions The Medical Laboratory Technician performs the following: Manual laboratory testing (no or little automation). Automated laboratory testing (requiring instrumentation tocomplete).

Collection of specimens:

May be required to perform venipuncture toinclude capillary punctures for blood specimens from patients ofvarious ages requiring developmentally appropriate techniques. Performs established laboratory testing according to accreditationrequirements and LMC Laboratory established procedures. Exhibits the knowledge and expertise in the following jobduties: Evaluate specimen preparation and handling for test analysis. Select, perform, evaluate, and monitor the performance of testprocedures using manual and /or instrumental techniques. Conduct quality control procedures on equipment and reagents andreviews and interpret results for acceptability. Perform basictroubleshooting to correct problems. Perform independently all testing assigned and multi-task asnecessary. Meet and exceed productivity in laboratory testing;promote teamwork among coworkers. Recognize and react to indicators of malfunctions; locates andimplement corrections; verify correct instrument operation usingprotocols and quality control checks. Recognize normal and abnormal values; evaluate and correlate datawith other test results/diagnosis and report results and problemsto appropriate individuals as necessary. Maintain instruments to include daily, weekly, and periodicmaintenance as assigned. Identify the causes of common problems and make simple repairs;perform troubleshooting of selected equipment, communicate withservice, and relay appropriate information. Maintain proper records for quality control reports, etc.; reviewsuch documents as abnormal results, overdue logs/pending logs andtake appropriate action. Perform correct notification of abnormal results per policy. Perform additional assignments independently as assigned by thesupervisor. Train new employees/students as assigned. Achieve and maintain competency for waived, moderate andpotentially selected high complexity testing. Competency isevaluated semi-annually the first year of hire and annuallythereafter. Works with others (e.g. coworkers, nurses and physicians and otherhealthcare workers, laboratory and hospital administration,patients and families) in a teamwork approach thatpromotes/encourages each person’s contributions toward achievingoptimal goals. Duties & Responsibilities Informs other personnel of circumstances that may affect thequality of testing and takes the responsibility to initiateappropriate follow-up. Notifies appropriate personnel of critical test results or resultsthat are deemed “alert” values. If interpretation or explanation of test results is sought, the MLTtakes the responsibility that the appropriate information is givenor referred to a supervisor/pathologist. Courteous and accurate in all communications and follows LMCconfidentiality policies. Demonstrates the ability to facilitate learning for coworkers,students, and other members of the health care team and community.

This could include both formal and informal facilitation oflearning. Maintains established continuing education requirements fornational certification and for MLT LMC level requirements. Possesses sensitivity to recognize, appreciate, and incorporatedifferences into the provision of care.
