The Lab Technical Assistant II is responsible for providing assistance to professional and managerial staff by coordinating daily work, managing the lab specimens and paper work required for testing as well as contributing to various quality and financial reports. The Lab Technical Assistant is also responsible for performing preparatory portions of laboratory tests within scope of practice under Tennessee Medical Laboratory Act. Performs a variety of tasks in the assigned Laboratory areas, such as Chemistry, Histology, Hematology, Blood Bank, or Microbiology. A Brief Overview The Lab Technical Assistant II is responsible for providing assistance to professional and managerial staff by coordinating daily work, managing the lab specimens and paper work required for testing as well as contributing to various quality and financial reports. The Lab Technical Assistant is also responsible for performing preparatory portions of laboratory tests within scope of practice under Tennessee Medical Laboratory Act. Performs a variety of tasks in the assigned Laboratory areas, such as Chemistry, Histology, Hematology, Blood Bank, or Microbiology. What you will do Performs pre analytical and post analytical portions of laboratory tests within scope of practice under Tennessee Medical Laboratory Act. Coordinates daily work to maximize efficiency and facilitate excellent patient care. Manages daily, weekly and monthly records and statistics to assist with quality and financial reports. Researches discrepancies and failures resulting in dissatisfied providers and/or patients/families. Communicates information effectively with co-workers, caregivers and patients/family as needed. Demonstrates initiative in identifying opportunities for self-development. Assists in the professional development of others through guidance and teaching. Follows established procedures for laboratory quality assurance, ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, quality standards, safety, competency, and policies and procedures. Performs other job functions as assigned or requested. Education/Formal Training Requirements High School Diploma or Equivalent Technical Degree or Diploma Phlebotomy Work Experience Requirements Bachelor’s degree 3-5 years Laboratory Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Strong knowledge of specimen requirements and medical terminology. Knowledge related to standard laboratory methods, practices, procedures, policies, regulations, and laboratory materials and equipment. Knowledge in laboratory quality assurance procedures. Knowledge of basic barcode label equipment, basic printers and copiers. Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel. Ability to think through complex processes, determine next steps and investigate any process failures. Recommends process changes to improve workflow and departmental efficiencies. Ability to learn various computer modules and applications and to teach others (such as Cerner Pathnet and Carenet); ability to research patient information as needed in various computer applications. Ability to organize and carry out large projects to conclusion. Ability to work under pressure to complete projects within time limits. Ability to organize multiple tasks and projects and maintain control of own and others’ work flow. Ability to lead others through processes and training steps. Ability to effectively communicate verbally with Associates, physicians and other outside professionals. Supervision Provided by this Position Provides leadership and guidance and acts as resource for less experienced Associates. Physical Demands The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion. Must have good balance and coordination. The physical requirements of this position are: medium work – exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently. The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading. Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact. Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials. Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
