Overview:

To supervise the day-to-day nursing activities of thefacility in accordance with current federal, state and localstandards governing the facility, and as may be directed by theDirector of Nursing Services or Assistant Director of NursingServices, to ensure that the highest degree of quality care ismaintained at all times.

Responsibilities:
Administrative FunctionsDuties:

Direct the day-to-day functions of nursing activities;participate in developing, maintaining and updating written nursingpolicies, procedures, manuals, objectives and philosophies;complete and maintain medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies,charts, etc.; admit, transfer and discharge residents as required;ensure that nursing services personnel are giving proper residentcare and performing their duties in accordance with writtenpolicies, procedures and manuals; participate in implementing andmaintaining a quality assurance program; periodically review andparticipate in updating resident discharge plans; participate insurveys and inspections by government agencies; interpret thedepartments policies and procedures to personnel, residents,families, visitors and government agencies as necessary; makereports and recommendations to the Director of Nursing Servicesconcerning operations of the department; and, implementrecommendations received from administration, other departmentsand/or committees as directed.

Ability to read andwrite in English, ability to communicate with residents, familiesand personnel and ability to remain calm under stress. Must be ableto assist in lifting and/or transferring Residents weighing between100 to 250 pounds.

Nursing Care Functions Duties:

Inform personnel ofnew admissions, ensure that rooms are ready, greet new admissionsand escort to rooms; admit, transfer and discharge residents asnecessary; provide written and oral reports to the Director ofNursing concerning status of residents, problem areas, etc.; assistin developing and implementing corrective actions as necessary;monitor and check foods brought into the facility by families andvisitors to ensure that it is within the residents dietaryallowances; make periodic reviews of nurses notes and charts andvisit daily with residents to observe and evaluate their physicaland emotional status; monitor treatment to ensure residents arereceiving proper care; ensure proper use of restraints whennecessary, in accordance with facility policies and procedures;ensure cleanliness and safety of all nursing service treatmentareas; make rounds with physicians as necessary and ensure properrecordkeeping; consult with physicians in providing care,treatment, diagnostic and therapeutic services, and notifyphysicians of resident accidents, incidents and changes incondition; meet with residents and families and report problemareas; administer professional services and provide direct nursingcare as necessary; assist in arranging transportation fordischarged residents; and, inform family members of the death of aresident and call funeral homes when requested.

Drug Administration Functions Duties:

Prepare andadminister medications as ordered by the physician; reviewmedication cards for completeness, accuracy and adherence, andnotify physicians of stop orders prior to the last dosage beingadministered; verify resident identities to ensure prescribedmedications are administered to the proper residents; ensure thatnarcotic records are accurate and notify the Director of Nursing ofall drug and narcotic discrepancies noted on the shift; ensureproper disposal of drugs and narcotics; order prescribedmedications, supplies and equipment and necessary; and. Ensure thatadequate levels of medications, supplies and equipment areavailable at all times, reporting needs to the Director ofNursing.

Charting and Documentation Functions Duties:

Sign, date andperform all routine charting and recordkeeping in accordance withestablished policies and procedures; complete and chart allaccidents and incidents involving residents and submit to theDirector of Nursing as required; encourage physicians to reviewtreatment plans and to record and sign orders, progress notes,etc., chart nurses; noted in an informative and descriptive manner;properly record telephone orders from physicians and transfer allphysician orders to resident charts, medication cards, treatmentand care plans, etc.; record now and/or change diet orders andforward to the Dietary Department; report all discrepancies notedconcerning physicians orders, diet changes, charting errors, etc.to the Director of Nursing Services; complete transfer anddischarge forms and ensure that proper documentation is recorded;and, complete and file all required forms, records, and charts uponresident admissions, transfers and/or discharges.

Personnel Functions Duties:

Assist in recruiting,interviewing, hiring, counseling, evaluating, disciplining andterminating nursing services personnel; document and coordinatepersonnel actions with the Personnel Manager or Administrator;schedule department work hours, including vacation and holidayschedules, shift and work assignments, etc. to ensure adequatestaffing and to expedite work; delegate administrative authority,responsibility and accountability to nursing services supervisorypersonnel as deemed necessary to perform assigned duties; ensurethat all nursing services personnel have valid and current licensesand are performing duties in accordance with acceptable nursingstandards; and, review personnel complaints and grievances andensure that all personnel are treated consistent with policies andapplicable laws.

Staff Development Functions Duties:

Develop workassignments; participate in reviewing and evaluating thedepartments staffing requirements, employee performance evaluationsand employee absenteeism; make recommendations (includingrecommendations concerning discipline, transfer and discharge) toadministration as necessary to ensure adequate staffing and toexpedite work; make daily rounds and report findings to theDirector of Nursing to ensure that nursing services personnel areperforming duties in accordance with acceptable nursing standards;ensure that personnel, residents and visitors follow establishedpolicies and procedures at all times; meet with nursing personnelin a regular basis to identify and correct problem areas and toimprove nursing services; and, review and report to the Directorpersonnel complaints and grievances and ensure that all personnelare treated consistent with policies and applicable laws.

Assist and participate in developing for eachresident a preliminary and comprehensive assessment and writtencare plan that identifies the nursing and medical problems and/orneeds of the resident and the goals to be accomplished for eachproblem and/or need identified; encourage residents and theirfamilies to participate in the development and review of careplans; ensure that all nursing services personnel are aware of thecare plans and that care plans are used in providing daily nursingservices to the residents; and, review nurses notes and monitorresidents to ensure that the care plans are being followed and thatresidents needs are being met.

Must speakand understand English.

Previous supervisory experience orcompletion of appropriate training program.
