KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Pre-Op Registered Nurse is responsible for the direct and indirect total nursing care of his/her assigned patients. He/she is also responsible for the supervision of assigned personnel. The position requires knowledge of both department and ambulatory surgery center policies and procedures relevant to the delivery of nursing care. Interpretive skills, frequent interactive and consultative associations, along with management and supervisory skills are inherent in this position. The ability to retrieve, communicate or otherwise present information in a written, auditory or visual fashion is essential. The primary method to express or exchange ideas is through the spoken word. Written, telephone and manual dexterity skills are required for this position. Communicate with Physicians when necessary. File chart notes and other medical information in appropriate chart, following proper charting procedures.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

Possess knowledge of planned procedure Communicates with physician’s offices on any important information relating to procedure Calls patient prior to surgery date to do an over the phone interview. Also informs patient of arrival time for surgery Verifies that all the correct paperwork is in the clinical chart Makes sure to initial and/or sign all the required paperwork Documents all the medication(s) that the patient is currently on Verifies and documents all allergies that may have Reviews all pre-operative test(s), history & physical and medical clearance from the Primary Care Physician. Notifies Nurse Manager and Anesthesiologist of any abnormalities Administers medication safely and accurately utilizing the seven rights (Right patient, medication, dose, time, route, documentation& right to refuse treatment) Verifies patient information, allergies, planned procedure and surgical site Documents and communicates patient status, surgical intervention and pertinent information to the Nurse Manager Communicates with surgical scheduler of any possible patient cancellations. Makes sure to fill out proper cancellation form for any cancellations Responsible and actively involved in the Quality Assessment / Performance Improvement activities
