JOB SUMMARY

The Medical Assistant is responsible for providing basic care to patients following established standards and practices.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Other duties may be assigned. Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned, which may include checking schedules and organizing patient flow. Escorting patients to exam/procedure rooms. Observes, records and reports patient observations and reactions to drugs and treatments to providers. Assisting patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc. Collecting patient history including current medications, allergies, symptoms, etc. Provide patient care as directed by the provider; this may include screenings, treatments in accordance with established standards. Assisting providers with various procedures as needed. Documents in the Electronic Medical Record and relays information/instructions to patient/family. Documents all interventions, phone calls, patient/family responses, medication dispensed or prescribed, hospital data. Answering patient phone calls and messages, acting as a communication liaison between the patient and provider. Fulfills clerical responsibilities as assigned which may include filing or sending medical records to a patient or referral provider, appointment scheduling. Collection and handling of lab specimens following established standards and practices. Adhere to infection control safety guidelines, maintaining equipment, instruments, and stock supplies. Utilizes electronic referrals process to complete requested physician referrals to NCHMD specialists and ancillary services.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum of High School or GED required. Completion of Medical Assistant or practical nursing training program with documented clinical practicum hours; OR Medical Assistant certification; OR a minimum of one-year experience in medical office setting as a Medical Assistant or like role. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. Verified ability to take accurate patient vital signs. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to effectively articulate and explain required information to patients. Knowledge of CPT and ICD9 codes.

Intermediate computer knowledge:

Uses Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows Knowledge of basic and specialty specific medical terminology. Capable of working under pressure in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions while maintaining a professional demeanor and control.
