Summary:
A Pathology Assistant II has passed the AAPA Fellowship exam and will be willing to obtain national certification when it is offered, and under administrative direction, provides patient care services through triage and accessioning of anatomic pathology specimens, and dissection of surgical pathology specimens. Educates students, house staff and allied health personnel. Advances medical science through participation in applied research as well as the development, improvement and implementation of new procedures. Is responsible, under the direction of the associate Chair of Department of Pathology for consultation and participation in activities relating to planning and implementation of procedures designed to enhance gross pathology and autopsy services.

Triage, assuring appropriate specimen accessioning, distribution and handling and dissection of AP specimens. Maintains adequate supplies and functional equipment in the grossing room and responsible for inventory management, cleanliness of the surgical pathology suite. Obtain pertinent clinical information and history, including scans, x-rays, laboratory data, etc. Describing gross anatomic features of surgical specimens, preparing tissues for histological processing, obtaining biological samples such as blood, tissue and toxicological material for studies such as flow cytometry, image analysis, immunohistochemistry, etc. and performing special procedures including faxitron imaging and tumor triage. Preparing and submitting appropriate tissue sections for light microscopy (routine processing) as well as special procedures such as frozen section, electron microscopy and immunofluorescence microscopy. Responsible for developing and maintaining protocols for all AP specimens and autopsy services, including interaction with other clinical services as appropriate. Ensures that specimens meet all labeling standards for accrediting agencies such as JCAHO and CAP and maintains various operations manuals as required. Participates in quality assurance activities. Assists in issues related to HIPPA, (patient confidentiality) and billing compliance. Assisting in the organization and coordination of anatomic pathology conferences.

10+ year’s experience working at the Anatomic Pathology Laboratory performing the functions of a Pathology Assistant –
Required Education:
Bachelors degree in Pathology Assistant – Required Certification/Licensure Successfully completed the American Association of Pathologist Assistants fellowship exam and must be willing to achieve national certification when this examination is established and available.
