Position Summary:
The primary goal of a Medical Assistant (RMA, & CMA) to increase the efficiency and the productivity of the physician they are working for. MA/ Scribes duties include performing all clerical and information technology functions for a physician in a clinic setting. This includes primary responsibility of the operation of the electronic health records. The MA (RMA, & CMA) must be able anticipate physician needs to facilitate the flow of patients in the clinic. MA (RMA, & CMA) must possess good judgment, organizational ability, initiative, attention to detail, and the ability to be self‐motivated are especially important when working as a scribe. MA (RMA, & CMA) must be adaptable and versatile as they will be responsible for many tasks. Good attendance is also an important element of this job.
Role and Responsibilities:
Screens patients according to FCHC protocols (i.e. obtaining vital signs, height, weight, vision/hearing testing) and any other procedures directed by the supervising provider/Clinical Coordinator, or Clinical Support Leaders. Performs accurate charting in medical record in accordance with FCHC policies and procedures. Provide assistance to nurses and providers as needed. Maintain exam rooms and work areas (i.e. keeping well‐stocked, orderly and clean, to include disinfecting exam tables between patients as per infection control policy). Perform phlebotomy/fingerstick as permitted by training. Administers injections according to position requirements (i.e., subcutaneous, intramuscular and intradermal injections). Perform procedures, as ordered (i.e., EKGs, nebulizer treatments, pulse oximeter, ear lavages, etc). Able to accurately make/cancel/reschedule appointments in the computer appointment system. Able to follow‐up on appointment to determine patient compliance and contact patients to reschedule (no‐show policy). Maintain strict infection control (i.e., sterilizing instruments, performing procedures, needle disposal, etc.). Understand all emergency protocols and respond accordingly Have current knowledge of and participate in maintenance of drug assistance programs Understand and assist in the referral process of patients to outside services or providers. Follow‐up on patient referrals, as necessary Understand mandatory reporting of child/elder abuse policy and procedure. Understand State requirements for reporting of communicable diseases and offering of special labs for pregnant patients. Understand and utilize the VFC program where applicable and document accurately including 680forms and vaccine administration records. Counsel patients per treatment plan (i.e., diet, exercise, medication, etc.) Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span. Must be able to identify and categorize each patient’s age‐specific grouping of needs, such as those for infant, adolescent, or geriatric patients. Performs in‐house waived testing, after they are quality controlled, which may include some or all of the following: pregnancy tests, hemocue/Hemoglobin, glucometer, urine dip, hemoccult‐stool, oraquick, or throat swab. Each test will be done according to directions/procedure and results logged into patients medical record Lab Roles and Responsibilities Greets and assists patients entering the lab for testing purposes Drawing of blood or collection of urine specimens by the use of established procedures for safety and patient comfort, including routine blood drawing and venipuncture techniques, butterfly/syringe techniques, finger sticks and other techniques, processing specimens, including pipetting, centrifuging, transferring serum or plasma into other tubes, freezing, preserving, dipping and slide preparation; packaging specimens for pickup and delivery for laboratory testing, labeling specimens as required and placing all necessary items in the specimen envelope; maintenance of records related to incoming patients and specimens delivered; completing and processing paperwork, including laboratory services log, requisition and other routine paperwork; processing test reports and the maintenance and ordering of all necessary supplies related to the foregoing. Responsible for running controls on all in‐house performed laboratory studies, according to manufacturer’s recommended schedule, and document results to be maintained in laboratory (i.e., pregnancy test, urine dipstick, Hemocue machine, Glucometer, and other tests as indicated at site). Responsible for keeping Communicable/Sexually Transmitted Disease log up to date Reject all improperly or unlabeled specimens Sort lab results by provider and distributing daily in a timely manner. if results are panic values, grossly abnormal, or are not back in a timely manner. Keep Accession Log in order by date for five years Ensure that CPT test codes placed onto routing slip are correct for test performed and that posted charges are appropriate. Record refrigerator and freezer temperature each morning in Refrigerator/Temperature Log. Review tests ordered by providers to ensure that correct tests are performed and are the least expensive alternative to give all of the desired results. Monitor laboratory for any potential safety hazard and take appropriate corrective action. Report hazard and action to Clinical Coordinator and Safety Officer. Keep work area clean and hazard free. Ensure approval is obtained, in advance, from Clinical Coordinator for any non‐capitated lab test in excess of $50 (does not apply to patients with third party coverage or personal funds “E”). Ensure OSHA required personal protection (gloves and eye protection) is worn while performing above duties and that universal precautions are observed at all times. Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span. Ensure patient confidentiality; pull and re‐file records adhering to the terminal digit filing system and the use of out guides; file reports (i.e. Lab/hospital and other) under appropriate section of the medical record in a timely manner; ensure that policies and procedures are followed in the release of patient information to third party payers, other health facilities, patients themselves, telephone releases or subpoenas/court orders and referring any questions to Center Manager/Supervisor immediately: Intake of patients: screen patients by asking chief complaint/reason for visit, obtain clinical database/health history, measure vital signs (height/length, tem, BP, pulse, respiration, weight, vision on new patients and head circumference on children) and appropriately record in patient’s medical record. Place in exam room and notify provider Perform and log activities of daily living, cardiovascular risk assessment, and record in medical record. Prepares patients and assists provider with procedures (i.e., pelvic exam including wet mount slide, PAP and DNA probe preparation, sterile field/tray setup, flexible sigmoidoscopy). Verify appointments, recall/reschedule missed appointments, prepares instruments and supplies for sterilization. Translates for provider or nurse (if applicable). Assists in keeping examining rooms and work areas clean, orderly, and stocked. Qualifications and Education Requirements:
Minimum Requirements (experience, training, and education): To effectively fulfill this position, candidate must meet the following requirements: High school diploma or equivalent. Proof of satisfactory completion of an approved medical assistant program or nursing assistant program; or One (1) year of experience in a medical related field. Registered and Certified Medical Assistants must maintain current RMA/CMA certification. Medical Assistants must maintain current RMA/CMA certification. Current CPR certification
