Pediatric Medical Assistant/Phlebotomist Job Description Job Purpose This position reports to the Clinical Support Manager. The Medical Assistant is one who has the basic knowledge and skills for assisting with the back office. As part of the Clinical Care Team and under the direction of the Chief Medical Officer, Physicians and Mid-Levels, and Office Manager (if applicable), the Medical Assistant will be involved in both direct and indirect patient care. The position consists of a variety of responsibilities, which may vary according to need. Medical Assistant Duties and Responsibilities Participates in the Care Team by actively being involved in pre-visit planning, morning huddles, and patient follow-ups as required. Participates on Patient-Centered Medical Home team activities and all other quality initiatives. Actively participates in quality improvement initiatives for clinical support staff members at GHMS, including the use of the Plan, Do, Study, Act cycle, the Care Model and other QI methodologies. Obtains and records patients’ medical history, vital statistics, or information such as test results into EMR per GHMS policies and procedures. Prepares treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping the rooms neat and clean. The Medical Assistant prepares and administers immunizations and medications as directed by the provider according to the licensure of the physician and the State of Georgia. Explains treatment procedures, medications, diets, or providers’ instructions to the patients. Changes dressings on wounds. Cleans and sterilizes instruments and disposes of contaminated supplies. Has a working understanding of clinic equipment and procedure, i.e. Blood Pressure machine, EKG machine, Audiometer, A1C machine, Spirometry, Nebulizers, Accucheck, Strep and Flu tests, etc. The Medical Assistant must have a working knowledge of, and be able to assist with, minor surgical procedures such as suturing, toenail removal, etc. Assists the physicians and mid-levels as needed. Performs general office duties, such as answering phone calls from patients, completing required documentation for patient care, or other office tasks as requested by provider(s) or supervisor(s). Assists in maintaining an inventory of supplies and equipment. Travels to remote GHMS locations to provide Medical Assistance coverage as needed as part of a rotation. Refers patients to in-house Community Health Worker or in-house Patient Assistance Program as needed. For the Medical Assistant with bilingual skills which are utilized in the workplace, she/he must be willing to interpret as needed for patients in the clinical setting. Mentors/trains new hires as needed. The Medical Assistant follows Corporate, Ethical, and HIPAA policies and procedures to ensure the confidentiality of all patient information. Effectively practices teamwork, respect for coworkers and supervisors, good attendance and punctuality. Properly requests time off as needed per GHMS policies and procedures. The Medical Assistant performs other duties as assigned by the physicians, mid-levels or supervisor(s). Phlebotomy Duties and Responsibilities Identifies patient. Collects, labels, and delivers blood specimens via venipuncture, finger stick and heel stick using appropriate age-specific devices. Receives and processes laboratory specimens. Performs patient registrations and enters tests listed on physician’s script. Maintains work area in a neat and clean manner. Maintains supplies at adequate level. Collects blood cultures using proper technique to avoid contamination. Participates in the education efforts of the department to include completing continuing education and the training of new employees to perform phlebotomy procedures. Communicates well with the patient and family to perform the procedure as well as with lab staff regarding specimen requirements, ordering, and miscellaneous requests. Formal Medical Assistant training preferred. 1-2 years Medical Assistant experience preferred.

Licensure / Certifications

/ Desired Credentials Current Medical Assistant Certification by successfully passing a Medical Assistant credentialing body examination Current BLS card from the American Heart Association prior to hire date Knowledge / Skills / Abilities Bilingual English/Spanish ability preferred, but not required. Must meet basic competency requirements upon hire, and advanced competency after on-the-job training is complete. Reads, speaks, understands, and writes proficiently in English. Knowledge of principles and processes for providing excellent customer service. Must be organized and attentive to details. Must be able to work quickly and efficiently to assure patient comfort and satisfaction. Able to maintain confidentiality with all aspects of information in accordance with practice, State and Federal regulations. Works cooperatively as an effective member of a Care Team. Works with initiative, energy and effectiveness in a fast-paced environment. Displays knowledge of basic computer skills as well as prior experience with an Electronic Health Record. Expertise in eClinical Works EHR a plus Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications:
