Job Summary:
The Pathologists’ Assistant is primarily responsible for assistingthe pathologist with surgical specimens and other related duties
- Assists, under the supervision of the pathologist, in selection,preparation, and dissection of surgical tissue sections for routinemicroscopic examination, immunofluorescence, electron microscopy,and other studies where specified.
- Assists in photography andgross description of surgical specimens.
- Ensures accuracy ofsurgical specimen patient information as well as accurate grossdescriptions.
- Assists in the selection and preparation of tissuesections for intraoperative consultations (frozen section),including embedding tissue, cutting tissue on a cryostat, andstaining of tissue slides.
- Procures fresh tissue samples forBiorepository tissue banking, ancillary studies such ascytogenetics, flow cytometry, and/or snap freezing for boththerapeutic and research purposes.
- Utilizes the Faxitron to obtainx-ray images and sends them to the PACS system.
- Performs propermaintenance of equipment, adequate supplies, and cleanliness neededin the performance of gross anatomic dissection.
- Assists thepathologist in preparing materials for both intra
- andinterdepartmental teaching exercises.
- Performs all computer systemfunctions necessary to achieve timely reporting of results
- Assists support staff and/or pathology residents with, as directedby a pathologist, the performance of a post-mortem examinationincluding photography, external examination, situ inspection,evisceration, dissection, recording of data, and any other relatedtask if needed.
- Lifts a minimum of 30 lbs. and stands a minimum of5 hours a day.
- Adheres to and meets both position-specific yearlycompetency assessments and the standards identified in the MedicalCenter’s Organizational Competencies.
- Other duties and/or projectsas assigned.
Schedule Notes:
M-F Flexible on day shift hours Noweekends, No holidays, No On Call.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Required Skills & Experience:
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience.
Education Requirement:
Required Education:
- Bachelor’s degree froma NAACLS accredited institution as a pathologists’ assistant withtraining that must include both didactic lectures and on-siteclinical training in anatomic pathology, specifically surgical andautopsy pathology.
- Bachelor degree must be in Health Sciences orother biological discipline.
