Job Description

Position Overview:

Columbia University Irving Medical Center, a premier academic medical center in New York, is seeking a highly qualified and experienced Assistant/Associate/Professor of Pathology and Cell Biology at CUMC who can provide strategic leadership and direction for our institutional biobank, while concurrently serving as the Medical Director for Clinical Laboratories in affiliated community hospitals. The successful candidate will possess expertise in clinical chemistry, hematology, informatics, and management, ensuring the highest standards of quality and innovation in both biobanking and clinical laboratory services. The successful candidate will have the appropriate training and will be board certified in Clinical Pathology by the American Board of Pathology or equivalent accrediting organization.

Key Responsibilities:

Biobank Leadership (50%):

  • Provide strategic vision and leadership for the biobank, aligning its operations with the research and clinical goals of Columbia University Irving Medical Center.
  • Oversee the management, acquisition, storage, and distribution of biological specimens, ensuring compliance with ethical and regulatory standards.
  • Collaborate with researchers, clinicians, and external partners to facilitate high-impact research initiatives and projects.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to enhance biobank operations, data management, and specimen integrity.
  • Drive innovation in biobanking practices through the integration of advanced informatics and data analytics. Medical Directorship (50%):
  • Serve as the Medical Director for clinical laboratories in affiliated community hospitals, ensuring the delivery of high-quality laboratory services.
  • Oversee clinical chemistry, hematology, and microbiology operations, providing expert guidance on diagnostic testing and quality assurance.
  • Collaborate with hospital administration to develop and implement strategic plans for laboratory services, optimizing efficiency and patient care.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory and accreditation requirements, maintaining the highest standards of safety and quality.
  • Mentor and support laboratory staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
Qualifications:

M.D., Ph.D., or M.D./Ph.D., board certification or board eligibility and eligibility for NYS Certificate of Qualification in relevant lab disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • MD, PhD, or equivalent degree in a related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in clinical chemistry, hematology/coagulation, informatics, and laboratory management.
  • Proven track record of leadership in biobank management and/or clinical laboratory oversight.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience in an academic medical center or similar environment is highly desirable.
