Certified Medical Assistant -Bilingual (Spanish) 2.8 2.8 out of 5 stars 212 East 106th Street, New York, NY 10029 Job Summary The Medical Assistant (MA) is responsible for assisting the Clinician and Nurses in patient care. Under the supervision of the Nurse, the MA performs clinical functions such as the collection of vital signs, in house (point-of-care) testing and phlebotomy, completes required forms and answers patient telephone calls.

Responsibilities General Nursing Skills:

Under strict protocol and under the supervision of the RN, MAs must demonstrate the ability to perform the following: Obtaining of vital signs (including height, weight, head circumference, temperature (oral and/or ear), pulse, respiration, and blood pressure) as appropriate for type of visit. Performance of clinical tests as required for specific visits including dipstick urinalysis, processing of specimens such as urine and stool for culture and other tests not limited to the following: peak flow, pulse oximeter readings, finger sticks for glucose/hemoglobin, urine pregnancy testing, rapid strep cultures, rapid HIV testing and TST placement/reading. Performance of hearing and visual acuity tests Phlebotomy EKG, including preparation of patients, recording of EKG recognition/elimination of artifacts, labeling EKG with patient information.

Patient Service Responsibilities:

Works with the entire health care team, including MDs, RNs, MAs, Operations staff, and facilities staff to provide care to patient population. Appropriately greets patient and obtains initial information from patient about reason for visit. Assists clinician when translation is needed. Assists clinician and prepares patient for the following procedures: Pap smear, ear irritations, breast exams, endometrial biopsies, etc. Ensures that medical chart is current and routed to the provider for patient visit and completes appropriate parts of the EMR chart to indicate work done, i.e., point of care testing. Print and give patients their “Visit Summary” after every visit. Schedule and print follow up appointments for patients after their visit. When requested by MD or RN, contacts patients via phone to obtain information, conveys M.D. advice and/or make appointments, etc. Assists in first aid when requested by RN. Obtains prescription prior authorization when assigned.

Clinical Support Duties:

Maintains the common work areas and exam rooms including stocking of clinical supplies, preparing rooms between visits, etc. Under the supervision of the RN, maintains medicines, supplies, and clinical equipment in good order. Prepares equipment for sterilization including disinfection of instruments and preparation and wrapping of instruments for sterilization. Assists in maintenance of the equipment controls and cleaning logs, e.g., glucometer, hemocue, clinitek, etc. Assist in collection of PHQ-2, PHQ-9, and Alcohol Abuse assessment responses.

Other Duties:

Participates in appropriate Settlement Health committees, such as: QA/CQI process and DPI. Attend all staff meetings. Participates in CME to maintain clinical skills. Demonstrates competency in computer system. Complies with all OSHA, infection control and Settlement Health protocol regulations. Performs other appropriate duties as requested by LPN and/or RN. Maybe required to perform duties and responsibilities not listed in this description on a temporary or long-term basis. Such as, but not limited to: form documentation, calling lab to reconfigure discrepancies, COVID Unit data input to EMR, Podiatry assistance, and Referrals reports.

Team Focused Provision of Care:

Works as a part of an assigned care team, defined as – provider, medical assistant, nurse, referral coordinator, with the option of including care manager, nutritionist, and behavioral health provider, as indicated. Team based communication is an expectation and should include interaction with support staff (MOAs, Call Center, enabling service providers) to encourage the engagement of the patient as a part of the care team.

Electronic Medical Records & Computer Responsibilities:

Responsible for the daily utilization of the Electronic Medical Record, GE Centricity to manage the schedule, make appointments and review medical records. Data entry of patient information into specific patient charts in the Electronic Medical Record. Ensure effective workflow including thorough documentation within the EMR system in a timely manner. This includes, but is not limited to all services rendered, vitals, screening questionnaires, and point of care testing provided during office visits. Initiate communication and/or follow-up using the EMR flag/care alert system to Clinicians, Referral Coordinator, and other Support Staff (including Billing, Frontline and Call Center). Document and route patient-related phone conversations via phone notes in the EMR. Responsible for the reconciliation of job related orders under the Orders module such as Services in Process, Outstanding Lab report, etc. Lab Order Processing; submission of lab requisitions to EMR-Link via the EMR. Create & document required letters for patients in the EMR. Educate patients and document teachings on wellness, prevention and early detection by providing care specific materials and resources to the patients and families. Ensure the preloading of labs sent from Mount Sinai or a laboratory other than BioReference. This may include preloading of historical information for transfer patients. Required to attend trainings and workshops to refresh and improve knowledge of the EMR. Competency of basic computer skills, to include but not limited to Microsoft Outlook. Check emails in Microsoft Outlook on a daily basis (minimum). Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or GED equivalency required. Graduate of an accredited program for Medical Assisting (300 hour program)

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

Fluency in English and Spanish required Possess a positive attitude and the ability to be proactive, resourceful and flexible Detailed oriented, able to work under pressure and multitask Basic computer skills with windows-based programs and internet navigation

AVAILABILITY REQUIREMENTS

Ability to work one or more Saturdays per month and one late night per week, or as needed

CERTIFICATION, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Medical Assistant or Nursing Assistant Certificate required. National Medical Assistant Certification preferred Current and valid

BCLS/CPR
