Job Description

The Medical Assistant performs clinical and clerical functions related to treatment of patients and organization of the department. Strives for behavior consistent with being committed to Excela’s missions, vision and values. 1. Regular, consistent, on-site, and timely attendance. 2. Delivers direct and indirect patient care in accordance with hospital/physician practices policies, procedures, and protocols. a. Assists to collects patient healthcare data, including VS, weight, chief complaint and pain assessment as directed b. Completes patient care treatments and testing as ordered. c. Complies with completeness, accuracy and timeliness of documentation. 3. Maintains a collaborative relationship with the physicians/nurses to achieve desired patient outcomes. a. Prepares patients for examinations, treatments, and procedures. b. Communicates pertinent information of actual or potential problems to the physician or nurse. c. Assists the physician with treatments and procedures as requested. 4. Performs clerical functions in support of patient care and office functions. a. Answers telephone calls, taking accurate messages and relaying them to the appropriate staff. b. Obtains and verifies accurate patient demographic and insurance information entering it into the billing system. c. Accurately enters codes, based on diagnosis given, and enters codes and charges into billing system. d. Completes forms and letters necessary for continued patient care. e. Completes additional clerical duties as assigned. 5. Provides for patient safety in compliance with hospital and physician practice policies. a. Utilizes two forms of patient identification before implementing any form of patient care. b. Labels all patient specimens with identifiers per policy. c. Uses patient identifiers on all forms of written documentation, including notes and point of care testing results. d. Adheres to infection control process, including standard precautions, to reduce the risk of acquiring or transmitting infections. 6. Demonstrates accountability for professional development. a. Demonstrates an ability to solve problems independently and seeks assistance from immediate when appropriate b. Maintains accountability for own actions. c. Effectively functions as a resource person. d. Acts as a patient advocate. e. Performs effectively in the role of preceptor/mentor to new hires/students. f. Assists in maintaining/decreasing organizational/departmental costs. 7. Assists in organizational compliance with regulatory agencies. a. Assists in continuous survey readiness or inspections and surveys. b. Performs all quality control, monitoring functions and reports out of range information immediately to supervisor. c. Consistently practices National Patient Safety Goals. 8. Facilitates interpersonal communication on a routine basis. a. Interacts with external customers in a courteous and respectful manner. b. Interacts with co-workers and internal customers in a respectful and professional manner. “Ability to perform the Essential Functions on the Physical Conditions chart; and the ability to perform the Essential Functions on the Working Conditions chart (see attached charts)” 1. Performs all patient supply management functions to include ordering and stocking of supplies. 2. Scans patient information into Wound Expert. 3. Maintains inventory of wound care instruments – sends to Central Processing for sterilization. 4. Maintains inventory of stock medications. • Related training/experience (preferably within the past five years) .
