Job Summary:
The Medical Assistant / Phlebotomist is responsible for performing clerical and clinical duties as assigned by the Practice Manager and/or a clinical professional. Clerical duties will include, but not limited to scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing, and coding information for insurance purposes. Clinical duties will include, but not limited to taking and recording vital signs, medical histories, preparing patients for examination, prescription refills, performing blood draws and specimen collections.

None Duties/Responsibilities:
Record and update patients’ past and current medical history, perform medication reconciliations as well as consult providers regarding any pertinent medical information pertaining to patient care. Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping the rooms neat and clean. Interview patients at visits to obtain relevant medical information, document and update patient medications / allergies and measure patient vital signs, weight, and height. Show patients to examination rooms and prepare them for the physician. Collect blood and urine specimens, process and prepare specimens for testing. Authorize drug refills, provide prescription information to pharmacies and complete prior authorizations and/or patient assistance forms. Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, or physicians’ instructions to patients. Properly dispose of contaminated supplies, including Sharps and biohazardous materials. Comply with all OSHA and HIPAA policies along with all company policies and procedures established. Perform general office duties, such as answering telephones, scheduling appointments and completing medical records requests. Perform patient check in and check out when necessary. Help physicians examine and treat patients, handing them instruments or materials when performing such tasks as giving injections, infusions removing sutures or catheters. Contact medical facilities or departments to schedule patients for tests or referrals. Perform other related duties, as assigned. This position does require the ability to travel to the Walterboro clinic as needed.
Required Skills/Abilities:
Ability to professionally and compassionately handle difficult or emotional patient situations. Ability to promptly and professionally respond to patient needs. Deep understanding of clinical and clerical procedures. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to solve problems as they arise. Solid understanding of clinical software and electronic medical records. Must have the ability to multitask and manage time effectively. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate degree or vocational school training is preferred. Minimum 2 years of experience as a medical assistant or similar role preferred. CMA/RMA certification highly preferred. Phlebotomy Certification and/or experience required.
