Job Summary Summary Responsible for ensuring accurate and efficient coding practices within the healthcare industry. Will be focused on analyzing medical records and converting healthcare procedures, diagnoses, and services into universally recognized codes.
Essential Functions:
- Serve as a subject matter expert in clinical coding and provide guidance to coding teams regarding accurate and compliant coding practices.
- Answer queries related to coding rules, regulations, and standards.
- Review coded medical records to ensure compliance with coding guidelines and standards, and provide feedback and coaching to coding professionals to improve accuracy and quality.
- Identify areas for process improvement and efficiency enhancement within the coding workflow.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to implement best practices and streamline coding operations.
- Assist in the implementation and integration of coding systems and tools, ensuring seamless transitions and minimal disruption to workflow.
- Provide training and support to coding teams during the adoption of new coding technologies.
- Work closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to clarify documentation, resolve coding-related issues, and ensure accurate representation of patient care in medical records.
Qualifications High School Diploma required and Completion of a Coding Certificate program or Health Information Technology Program 3+ years work experience equivalent required in lieu of degree AS/BS in Health Information Technology/Administration or related healthcare administration program preferred. ICD-10-CM and CPT education required for both the Hospital and Professional coding. Experience in clinical coding within a healthcare setting, with a focus on coding accuracy and compliance. 3-5 years required 3+ years work experience equivalent required in lieu of degree Licenses and Credentials CCS, and/or
RHIT/RHIA
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- In-depth knowledge of coding systems, such as ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS, as well as familiarity with coding guidelines and regulations (e.g., HIPAA, HITECH Act).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to review complex medical records and identify coding errors or inconsistencies.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and healthcare professionals.
- Proficiency in using coding software and electronic health record (EHR) systems.
- Detail-oriented mindset and ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meeting deadlines and managing multiple priorities.
- Up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes related to clinical coding.
