Chief of Nephrology Mobile, Alabama Position Summary The new Chief will have a strong record ofclinical and academic leadership in nephrology. As an academic andeducation leader, the new Chief will lead the division insuccessful resident training and evaluation of learners, as well asmentoring and sponsoring internal medicine residents interested ina career in nephrology. The incumbent will be expected to nurture the existingcollaborative and inclusive work culture. The Division ofNephrology focuses on adult care and is involved in population andpublic health, supporting several local Federally Qualified HealthCenters. The current practice is comprised of three nephrologistsand two advanced practice providers. A fourth nephrologist willjoin the division after completing his fellowship in 2025. Inaddition, the division serves as medical director of 1 inpatientdialysis unit and 3 outpatient dialysis units. Nephrology Division The Division of Nephrology provides nephrologyservices and consultative care for inpatients at USA HealthUniversity Hospital and the USA Health Childrens and Women’sHospital and has exciting opportunities to expand services in thelocal region. The division is deeply committed to excellence inteaching and training of students, residents and other healthcareproviders. The division has started the application profess for anephrology fellowship as part of the strategic goals to furtherexpand access to nephrology care on the Gulf Coast. Responsibilities Basic responsibilities will include maintainingclinical practice in nephrology, supporting education of internalmedicine residents and medical students, and providing mentorshipto faculty. Applicants should understand the medical, educational,clinical and administrative issues for internal medicine residentsand 1st and 4th year medical students at a small medical school.
Providers will assist with inpatient nephrology care management(both independently and with residents) and outpatient clinicalactivity. Successful applicants will assist with the residencyprogram needs and quality improvement programs. There areexpectations for career advancement through the academic promotionprocess. Additional responsibilities for this role include but are notlimited to:
- Oversee and guide the division by actively promotingclinical care, research and continuing medical education throughprograms that maximize exposure of our exceptional care delivery,faculty and expertise.
- Oversee the day-to-day clinical serviceresponsibilities around nephrology.
- Teach and mentor medicalstudents, residents and other healthcare providers.
- Recruit andretain high-caliber faculty and staff.
- Proactively seekentrepreneurial opportunities for the division.
- A commitment tofostering a diverse and inclusive learning and patient careenvironment.
- Oversee all patient care, professional work andMedical Staff administrative activity by the Nephrology services asestablished by the Medical Staff bylaws, rules and regulations
- Continually assess provider activities and initiate changes thatwill improve the quality of services offered, enhance performance,and/or upgrade efficiency and effectiveness.
- Responsible for allrisk management, coding compliance and quality assurance activitiesand functions in and related to the practice.
- Acts as an advisorand consultant in the establishment of operational policies of thepractice to include: (1) purchasing and capital allocations; (2)managed care plan participation; (3) budget and practice expenses;(4) Medicare/Medicaid participation; (5) Billing and collection ofprofessional fees; (6) Personnel management and related policies;(7) Risk management and quality assurance; and (8) Codingcompliance.

QualificationsThe new chief will have a distinguished academic career including aleadership role within a multifaceted academic department ofinternal medicine. A successful candidate should possess many, ifnot all, of the following qualifications: A MD, MD/PhD, orequivalent degree; he/she will be expected to qualify forappointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor at TheWhiddon College of Medicine. Exceptional leadership record at atop-ranked medical school, academic health center (preferred) orhealth system, and, ideally, experience working in aninterdisciplinary environment. Demonstrated personal andprofessional commitment to valuing diversity and promotinginclusion by modeling and fostering diversity and culturalproficiency. An entrepreneurial, collaborative, creative and drivenspirit. A distinguished academic and professional career, includingteaching, research, and clinical experience. Superior track recordin building and/or contributing to collaborative team cultures.
