JOB SUMMARY

The Emergency Department Physician provides care for patients in Emergency Department according to established procedures. During assigned shifts, the physician is present in the hospital and available to provide direct care or indirect patient services and medical direction to the rest of the Emergency Department staff and the pre-hospital system (EMSS).

PRE-REQUISITES
Education:

Must be a graduate of an approved education program with current licensure to practice medicine as a Physician in the State of Vermont. Physician must be Board eligible and certified in a primary specialty (EM, Family Practice, Surgery). Physician must obtain and/or maintain ACLS Certification.

Experience:

At least one-year experience in an inpatient hospital setting preferred

Special Skills:

The Emergency Department physician must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span. He or she must be able to assess and interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s age specific needs and provide the care needed by the neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and/or geriatric patient group. Must have working knowledge of diagnostic/therapeutic equipment used in the department. Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Must possess adequate skill and knowledge in order to effectively utilize technology while performing related duties. All candidates should demonstrate interest in and understanding of Emergency Medical Service Systems (EMSS) in general and Vermont EMS District 1 in particular, including their responsibility for medical control of pre-hospital care.

Reports To:
Medical Director, Emergency Department Other Contacts:

Medical Staff Members, patients and patients’ families, law enforcement, community members and hospital employees.

Machinery or Equipment Used:

Computer, telephone, wheelchair, gurney, fax, copier, diagnostic equipment including but not limited to ED Ultrasound Unit, ECG machine, external pacer, Dinamap blood pressure machine, monitor, defibrillator, cast removal saw, SMS computer, and Puls-E-Vac.

Physical Demands:

Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing/walking. Lifts, positions, pushes and/or transfers patients. Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching.

Working Conditions:

Regularly exposed to the risk of bloodborne diseases. Contact with patients under wide variety of circumstances. Exposed to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries and illness). Subject to varying and unpredictable situations. Handles emergency or crisis situations. Perform emergency care. Occasionally subjected to irregular hours. Occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries.

Required Protective Equipment:

Eye protection, goggles or mask with shield, gown, non-sterile and sterile gloves.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Provides diagnosis, treatment, consultation and follow up for patients being seen at Northwestern Medical Center’s Emergency Department or Intermediate Care Unit under the general supervision of the Medical Director. Competes H+P Orders appropriate lab and diagnostic procedures and studies Interprets and integrates data to deliver appropriate therapeutic goals Utilizes referral services when appropriate Provides education to patients on both acute and chronic care of condition Effectively communicates with the patient and the family/support system about the treatment plan, resources and required follow up care Utilizes the hospitals electronic health record by appropriately documenting all patient interactions. Actively participates in hospital committees and maintains both a collegial and independent relationship with members of the medical staff and Hospital employees. Demonstrates support of and assists with the execution of cost saving process improvement initiatives. Partners with other departments of the hospital to ensure efficient flow of patients. Provides supervision to Advanced Practice Providers as the supervising physician as needed and in the absence of the Medical Director.
