To perform a variety of treatment planning and quality assurance services related to radiation therapy. To monitor patients during treatment procedures and ensure proper calibration and quality assurance of therapy units. Education & Experience Must be a certified medical dosimetrist (C.M.D.) by the Medical Dosimetry Certification Board (MDCB) or board eligible with requirement to pass within one year Certifications, Licenses or Registration required: C.M.D. or board eligible Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of radiation safety procedures, standards, and protocols. Knowledge of accreditation and certification requirements and standards. Leadership and training skills. Decision-making skills. Ability to prepare radiation treatment plans for patients, based on prescribed dosages. Ability to read and interpret x-rays. Ability to monitor and/or maintain quality control standards. Ability to take patient measurements and develop patient contours for radiation treatment. Ability to develop, adapt, and modify dosage intensity/distribution calculations to meet individual shape variations. Ability to calibrate and operate radiation detection instruments. Ability to calculate, establish, and monitor radiation exposure fields and tolerances. Knowledge of patient immobilization devices and related treatment needs for radiation patients. Ability to prepare and operate sealed radioactive sources and high-dosage radiation equipment. Ability to evaluate the progress of therapeutic programs and to make individual modifications. Responsibilities Prepares treatment plans based on dosage prescribed by physician; confers with physician on patient treatment plans and objectives. Takes patient measurements necessary to generate treatment plans; views x-rays for positions and size of lesions; makes contour of patient, inputs information into computer to simulate patient’s condition and accounts for geometrical variations in the shape of the irradiated field; reports each shape of field, dosage necessary behind each shape, and distribution of dose for each setting. Measures outputs of radiation through use of radiation detection instruments and calculation; determines the distribution of field of exposure and ranges of accuracy. Prepares dosage calculations for procedures; prepares sealed radioactive sources and operates specialized equipment to implant high levels of radioactivity into patients. Provides instruction to professional staff and radiation therapy technologist students in treatment planning; assists in the development of new treatment techniques. Maintains quality assurance for all related dosimetry treatments.
