The Medical Dosimetrist is a member of the radiation oncology department and subdivision of the radiation physics team. These professionals possess knowledge and expertise in radiation treatment planning and practice alongside the Radiation Oncologist and Medical Physicist. The intent of this job description is to provide a summary of the major duties and responsibilities of this position and shall not be considered as a detailed description of all the work requirements that may be inherent in the position.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Follows the dose prescription specified by the Radiation Oncologist, plans a treatment technique by means of a computer and/or manual computations that will deliver a prescribed radiation dose to a defined tumor volume. Reliably performs image registrations with various image data sets which include diagnostic images, previously treated data sets, and outside images. Accurately identifies and contours organs at risk and dose limiting structures on the planning CT. Coordinates and/or assists in treatment simulations and tumor localizations, including computed tomography and MRI, when indicated, for radiation treatment planning. Assists in the planning of the fabrication of compensating filters, custom shields, planning or production of molds, casts, and immobilization devices. Responsible for successful technical continuity of care, including assisting the technical staff in the implementation of the treatment plan. Accurately performs calculations for treatment delivery, documents all information into the EMR and verifies accuracy of dose calculations by an approved method established by the Chief Physicist Provides technical assistance to the medical physicist, when requested, in radiation protection, qualitative and quantitative machine calibrations, and quality assurance of the radiation equipment. Assists in the application of specific methods of dosimetry (ion chamber, TLD, or film) to special clinical problems. Assists in Brachytherapy procedures and in the subsequent manual and/or computer calculation of the dose distributions of these procedures. Practices safe protection for self and patients adhering to the guidelines of radiation protection and infection control. Detects equipment malfunctions and takes appropriate action. Provides education regarding radiation therapy procedures to patients and family. Assumes responsibility for assigned area, making sure all equipment and supplies necessary for that area are readily available for use. Assists in gathering, recording data, and serving as committee members for Radiation Oncology Quality Assurance and Continuous Quality Improvement Programs. Teaches, trains, and provides educational resources for student Dosimetrists, Radiation Therapists and assists in the evaluation process of the students. Maintains responsibility for own professional development and keeps current on new planning techniques, devices, and methods through active participation in inservices, continuing education program, and/or self-directed learning. Demonstrates/models the hospitals core values and customer service behaviors in interactions with all customers (internal or external). Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment and knowledge of growth and development appropriate to the age of the patient treated (neonate, pediatric, adolescent or geriatric). Knowledgeable regarding patient condition, history and appropriate background and information pertinent to the patients’ treatment. Maintains confidentiality of all material within the hospital as well as proper release of information. Complies with hospital and departmental policies regarding safety, attendance and dress code. Provides emotional support for patients and family members. Directs patients and family members to appropriate personnel and agencies for additional support. Assists in radiation therapy treatment procedures. Assists in lifting and transporting patients when necessary. Performs all other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS

Frequent use of fingers to operate computer. Sitting for up to 7 hours per day, in 30-minute increments. Frequent use of hands for chart handling and writing. Twisting and turning of hands to operate equipment. Lifts treatment aids weighing up to 50 pounds. Carries objects of up to 50 pounds. Occasionally stoops and bends. Reaches above shoulder level. Hearing as it relates to normal conversation. Seeing as it relates to general vision and depth perception and visual monotony.

EDUCATION

A graduate of a formal university, college, or hospital-based Dosimetry program of nine months’ duration or longer. Must be CMD certified within two years of eligibility.
