Birmingham General Responsibilities:
Assists the Animal Resources Program (ARP) by managing the Animal Resources Veterinary Surgery Services, ARP Pharmacy, and other support services provided by ARP, in addition to managing the Animal Health Technicians and Rodent Health Specialists. Directs all provisions of clinical, surgical and research support services and functions as a member of a team of professionals to provide veterinary care to research animals. Ensures all technical clinical work of the clinical services area is performed in full accordance with ARP SOPs, Standards and Policies. Communicates with researchers about issues in their animal use protocols as it relates to animal health and animal experimental procedures. Serves as a liaison between the ARP, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and research staff. Strives to always adhere to ARP values, Communication, Respect, Integrity, Professionalism, and Trust. Requires some weekend and holiday duty. May require duty as essential personnel in the event of bad weather, natural disasters, etc.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
Directs hiring, training, evaluation of work performance, time keeping, and disciplinary action for Animal Health Technicians (AHT), Rodent Health Technicians (RHT) and other related personnel. Manages the large animal surgical program and other veterinary services provided by the Animal Page 2 of 3 Resources Program (ARP). Assists with training and education of ARP and research staff as a lead instructor. Manages all aspects of the ARP pharmacy and federally controlled drugs. Manages animal health and United States Department of Agriculture records. Maintains billing and inventories of veterinary medical supplies needed in the clinical services. Orders supplies as needed. Interacts with vendors supplying veterinary services. Manages AHT and RHT staff scheduling to ensure provision of timely surgical (booking resources, administering and monitoring anesthesia, post operative monitoring, sterilization of equipment), and special clinical assistance (booking resources, ensuring personnel training and availability). Creates, updates, modifies standard operating procedures (SOP) for veterinary staff. Keeps the IACUC informed about the health care program by attending meetings as requested. The employee maintains familiarity with active relevant IACUC protocols and assists with program review and routine inspections when available. Serves as a chief contact person for ARP Veterinary Services, communicating with researchers in a professional manner. Answers questions and initiates steps to meet needs or solve problems. Attends and presents at local/regional/national meetings to stay up to date on new equipment and techniques as funds allow and regulations require. Performs other duties as assigned.
Salary Range:
$62,355

Qualifications Education & Experience:
Bachelors degree in a related field and two (2) years of managerial and/or supervisory experience required. Work experience may substitute for education requirement. Active Veterinary Technician Certification/Registration/License is preferred. Advanced laboratory animal medicine/science degrees/certifications (such as
MLAS, LATG, SRA, CMAR
) preferred.
