Job Description

Equine Veterinary Technician Manager / Clinic Director of Patient Care Staff Peterson & Smith Equine Hospital 4747 SW 60th Avenue, Ocala, FL 34474 Peterson Smith Equine Hospital + Complete Care is currently seeking an experienced Director of Hospital Patient Care Staff to join our team. We are one of the most highly recognized large equine practices in the United States providing a diverse range of patient services. Since our founding in 1981, Peterson Smith Equine Hospital + Complete Care, has been dedicated to fostering exceptional client relationships through our unsurpassed patient care. We are seeking an energetic and personable leader to oversee and guide our medicine and surgery departments to establish and implement protocols and training plans that focus on providing high quality patient care and client satisfaction. This individual must share our passion for horses and be able to show progressive development in an equine veterinary practice with previous technician experience. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Interview, hire, discharge, develop and retain hospital patient care team members.
  • Create, implement, and execute an on-boarding process that allows for the successful integration of all new patient care team members to support a cohesive team.
  • Ensure the patient care team is being properly utilized and allocated within the hospital by the medicine and surgery department managers.
  • Develop new and current staff members by providing hands-on training, demonstrations, lectures, and other avenues of learning; monitor and document employee training progress; create and discuss corrective actions and improvement plans based on training observations.
  • Conduct quarterly training sessions that include patient care team members from all shifts and barn crew, when appropriate, to support team synergy and dynamics.
  • Evaluate, revise, and design training programs for patient care team to create a well-trained and proficient staff in patient care and handling.
  • Create a cohesive, tight-knit and unified patient care team by supporting, planning and/or executing onsite and offsite team building activities.
  • Ensure all medicine and surgery department manuals and SOP are up to date and comply with company guidelines on patient care and any governing legal requirements for veterinary practices.
  • Collaborate closely with veterinarians and other staff members to identify training needs and skills gaps and develop a training plan to address and correct any performance deficiencies.
  • Make daily rounds throughout the hospital to ensure patient care, medical records, documentation, equipment care, and use, cleanliness, safety, and biohazard standards are being met; take immediate action to correct any deficiencies identified.
  • Prepare and conduct annual staff performance reviews in a timely manner.
  • Develop and reconcile annual and monthly department budgets and identify variance reasons.
  • Work closely with the COO to develop and accomplish strategic company goals and manage fiscal responsibilities, including budgeting and resource allocation within the clinic.
Qualifications:
  • VET Tech certification (CVT or LVT) or associate’s or higher degree in equine science, a plus.
  • Previous horse handling experience required.
  • Previous experience as an Equine Veterinarian Technician, required.
  • Previous experience as an Anesthesia Technician, preferred.
  • Proven track record of successfully supervising and managing employees.
  • Capable of projecting a positive and professional attitude that inspires trust, respect, and collaboration
