The primary goal of the ophthalmic scribe is to increase the efficiency and productivity of the physician in the clinic setting. This role requires attention to detail, communicating clearly to patients and staff members, strong organizational skills, effectively multi-task to facilitate clinic flow and a solid understanding of ophthalmic terminology and procedures.
OPHTHALMIC SCRIBE RESPONSIBILITIES
Documentation:
Accurately record patient histories, symptoms, examination findings, diagnoses, and treatment plans during patient encounters. This documentation may include electronic medical records (EMRs) or other designated record-keeping systems.
Assistance During Examinations:
Assist ophthalmologists during patient examinations by preparing equipment, obtaining patient histories, and documenting findings in real-time.
Patient Education:
Provide patients with educational materials and instructions as directed by the ophthalmologist, including information about prescribed medications, treatment plans, and post-operative care.
Administrative Support:
Perform various administrative tasks to support the efficient operation of the ophthalmology practice, such as scheduling appointments, answering phones, and maintaining patient records.
Compliance:
Ensure compliance with relevant healthcare regulations, privacy laws (such as HIPAA), and practice policies related to patient confidentiality and data security.
Communication:
Communicate clearly and effectively with ophthalmologists, other healthcare professionals, and administrative staff to facilitate coordinated patient care and workflow efficiency.
- Accurately and thoroughly document medical visits as they are being performed by the physician.
- Assist with prescribing medications and refills as needed by Physician.
- Assist in the efficient flow of patients through sequence and evaluation.
- Review with the patient, written instructions as indicated by the physician.
- Cleaning and prepping exam rooms for patients.
- Must be able to work at alternative locations as needed.
- Perform other duties and assume various responsibilities as determined by the team lead, practice supervisor or Doctor.
OPHTHALMIC SCRIBE QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS
- Strong understanding of ophthalmic terminology, anatomy, and common eye conditions. Familiarity with diagnostic tests and procedures commonly performed in ophthalmology.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Proficiency in typing and computer literacy, including experience with EMR systems or medical software. (Preferred)
- Maintains professionalism in interactions with patients and coworkers.
- Exhibits a positive attitude and is flexible in accepting work assignments and priorities.
- Meets attendance, tardiness expectations.
- Dependable and follows policies and procedures.
- Computer skills and EMR experience is preferred.
- Performs quality work.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Experience in a Medical setting (preferably in an Ophthalmology practice).
- Excellent data entry and typing skills.
- Previous EMR experience.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Certified Medical Scribe (COS)
Preferred Physical Requirements:
- Periods of sitting, prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, lifting, and stretching.
- Requires normal range of eyesight, hearing and aptitude to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate information.
