Job Summary The Medication Assistant (MA)serves as caregiver who provides resident-centered nursing care anddaily living assistance to assigned residents under the supervisionof a charge nurse. Knowledge of and delivers age-appropriate carerelated to the physical and psychological needs of the resident asper plan of care. Provides assistance with basic health care needsincluding daily living activities that may include, but are notlimited to, bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing/undressing,obtaining and recording vital signs, and providing psycho-socialsupport and other personal care to assigned resident. May assistthe resident in transferring, re-positioning, and walking usingcorrect and appropriate transfer techniques and equipment andprovides range of motion and passive exercises. Completes tasksrelated to food preparation and dining, while creating a positivedining experience for the resident. May assist residents with mealsand snacks; provide water and supplements as appropriate.
Administers prescribed medications as delegated by a licensed nurseand within their scope of practice as defined by state regulations.
Documents the outcomes related to resident care, medicationadministration, behavior, activity, and dietary. Communicateschanging condition, medication follow-up and care relatedconcerns/responses to the charge nurse. Collects non-invasive bodyfluid specimens and gathers vital signs. Provides housekeeping andlaundry services to assist residents with keeping living areasclean and operational. Provides assistance and documentation withwellness and recreational programs and encourages residents toparticipate. May participate in departmental/organizationcommittees and task forces as needed. Qualifications High schoolgraduate or general equivalency diploma (GED) preferred, but notrequired. Minimum age of 18 preferred. Prior clinical or nursingassistant experience in long-term care preferred. Satisfactorilycompletes yearly department specific competency testing andmaintains a record of continuing education credits for each year. Aminimum of 12 hours continuing education are required annuallybased on state requirements. Maintains all department specificrequired certifications. When applicable, may need a valid driver’slicense and auto insurance.
Iowa:
Require Certified NursingAssistant (CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing. CNAcertification must be maintained with the State Board of Nursing.
Successful completion of a state-approved Certified MedicationAide/Assistant course once CNA certification is obtained.
Minnesota:
Must have nursing assistant certification, havecompleted the 75-hour course and be registered with the MinnesotaNursing Assistant Registry. Successful completion of astate-approved Trained Medication Assistant course.
North Dakota:
Require Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with theState Board of Nursing. CNA certification must be maintained withthe State Board of Nursing. Successful completion of astate-approved Certified Medication Aide/Assistant course once CNAcertification is obtained. If working in an Assisted Living orBasic Care facility, Medication Assistant I certification required.
If working in a skilled nursing facility, Medication Assistant IIcertification is required.
South Dakota:
Must successfully completethe state approved Certified Medication Aide (CMA) course. CMAcertification must be maintained with the State Board of Nursing.
