The Medication CareManager is responsible for providing the highest degree of qualitycare and services by administering medication and treatments in asafe organized manner. Responsibilities include but are not limitedto administration of medications, documentation of medicationadministration and providing resident care while demonstrating theMission for Sunrise Senior Living, “to champion the quality of lifefor all seniors” in accordance with federal, state/provincial, andlocal laws, standards, and regulations and Sunrise Senior Livingpolicies to promote the highest degree of quality care and servicesto our residents.
RESPONSIBILITIES & QUALIFICATIONS
Responsibilities:

Medication Administration:
- Provides the highest degree of qualitycare and services by administering medication and treatments in asafe organized manner.
- Reviews, reads, notates, and initializesDaily Log to document and learn about pertinent information aboutresidents.
- Receives medication updates from Resident CareDirector (RCD) or Wellness Nurse.
- Administers, assists with, andobserves medications and treatments for each resident using themedication administration record and the Six Rights of MedicationPass (“Right” resident, medication, dosage, time, route, right torefuse).
- Ensures that medications are passed according to times.
- Documents and initials as medications are given and ensures thatappropriate documentation is completed for refusal or missed doses.
- Maintains confidentiality of all resident information includingresident medication among other residents.
- Reports all residentconcerns made while administering the medication to the RCD orWellness Nurse.
- Restocks medication cart after all medicationpasses.
- Assists in checking medication regardless of packagingsystem.
- Assesses the residents to determine need for “as neededmedication” and appropriately documents and reports to supervisor.
- Counts all narcotics with another Medication Care Manager (MCM)or Lead Care Manager (LCM) each shift.
- Maintains and cleans theMedication Room, medication carts, and treatment carts forneatness, cleanliness, availability of medications, and expiredmedications.
- Follows re-fill process for medications.
- Helpsresidents maintain independence and promotes dignity and physicalsafety of each resident adhering to the Sunrise Principles ofService.
- Strives to understand and respond to each resident withempathy, always remaining mindful of the resident’s uniquecommunication patterns, history, and basic human needs.
- Practicesroutinely good standard care precautions of cleanliness, hygiene,and health.
Resident Care Communications:
- Notifies RCD of anyresident and/or family concerns through the LEAD process.
- Attendsand actively participates in daily Cross Over meetings facilitatedby the LCM.
- Participates in the development of the IndividualizedService Plans (ISP)/Individualized Care Plans (ICP) and monthlyupdates.
Risk Management and General Safety:
- Partners withcommunity team to ensure community is in compliance withOSHA/British Columbia Workers Compensation Act and OccupationalHealth and Safety Regulation requirements, promoting RiskManagement programs and policies, and adhering to safety rules andregulations.
- Practices safety procedures at all times includingPersonal Protective Equipment (PPE), fire extinguishers, SafetyData Sheets (SDS), and Lockout Tagout procedures.
- Reports allaccidents/incidents immediately.
- Reports all unsafe and hazardousconditions/equipment immediately.
- Ensures any cords, carts,equipment, and other hazards are always kept out of the way, notblocking exits and in compliance with fire codes.
- Complies withall infection control techniques, placement of bio-hazardcontainers, removal techniques, procedures, and policies.
- Understands and practices the proper method of attending to anddisposing of, and the possibility of exposure to, blood bornepathogens, bodily fluids, infectious waste, sharp sticks, andhazardous materials.
- Reports occupational exposures to blood,body fluids, infectious materials, sharp sticks and hazardouschemicals immediately.
- Ensures oxygen tanks are stored safely,exchanges guest/resident’s tanks when empty and monitors to makesure liters of oxygen are at prescribed levels.

- Contributes to the overall engagement programs andprocesses (customer and team member engagement) includingparticipating in the team member engagement survey and engagementimprovement planning workshops.
- Attends regular meetings; TownHall, Department Team., Cross Over, Medication Technician., andothers as directed by the Supervisor/Department Coordinator.
- Attends regular training by RCD and neighborhood coordinators.
- Maintains compliance in assigned required training and all trainingrequired by state/province or other regulating authorities asapplicable to this role to ensure that Sunrise standards are alwaysmet.
Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, anindividual must be able to perform each essential dutysatisfactorily. The requirements listed throughout this jobdescription are representative of the knowledge, skills, andabilities required.
- High School diploma/GED accepted and may berequired per state/provincial regulations.
- In states/provinceswhere appropriate, must maintain certifications.
- Maintain thefollowing certifications and ongoing training and re-education asrequired by Sunrise and state/provincial regulations:
- CPR andFirst Aid
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Previous experienceworking with seniors preferred.
- Desire to serve and care forseniors.
- Ability to make choices and decisions and act in theresident’s best interest.
- Ability to react and remain calm indifficult situations.
- Ability to handle multiple priorities.
- Possess written and verbal skills for effective communication andlevel of understanding.
- Demonstrates good judgment, problemsolving and decision-making skills.
- As applicable, all Sunriseteam members who drive a Sunrise vehicle must sign the Driver jobdescription and understand the key essential duties for safety andregulatory compliance.
