POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting directly to the PBIS supervisor, the Behavior Specialist will address and support students’ academic and behavior challenges; teaching social skills and providing behavior support. Will work closely with the student’s family and school staff to design a plan for continued academic and social success.

PRIMARY DUTIES

Provide mandated and at-risk individual and group counseling addressing academic, personal and/or interpersonal challenges. Keep up to date charts for assigned caseload. Advise and partner with classroom staff and educators to develop solutions to student, group and school-wide issues. Provide family counseling on an as needed basis. Evaluate psychiatric emergencies (suicide evaluations) Help develop school protocols for effectively supporting students. Execute all necessary paperwork in a timely manner. Assist in data collection and monitoring of behavior support services. Perform a variety of specialized learning techniques, communication strategies, and applied behavioral activities or techniques pertaining to the instruction of deaf students. Assist in modeling the use of positive behavior support and intervention techniques for other staff. Participate in team meetings and in-service trainings. Support the school’s Strategic Planning initiatives with an emphasis on strengthening the culture. Demonstrate commitment to the school purpose, vision, and mission. Perform additional job duties as assigned by supervisor.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Exceptional relationship-building, writing, and communication skills A strong sense of personal accountability for student success Strong organizational and time management skills Effective facilitation, negotiation, and problem-solving skills Knowledge of child and adolescent development, behavior, and various learning styles. Basic technology proficiency, including Google and Microsoft applications and search engines. Practical understanding of Non-Violent Crisis Intervention or similar training Ability to communicate in American Sign Language (ASL)

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Master’s degree in social work or counseling Must possess relevant state or nationally recognized professional certification/licensure (such as NYS LMSW/LCSW, NCC, LMHC, or CRC) or attain within one year of employment Two to four years behavioral support and/or counseling experience

SECURITY CLEARANCE

Required clearances include medical clearance, fingerprinted by the NYC Board of Ed, SCR, and SEL clearance.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must have the ability to sit and stand for prolonged periods of time. Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
