The Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) provides direct care and support to individuals experiencing mental health and substance use challenges. This role involves assisting patients with daily activities, monitoring behavior, and ensuring a safe and supportive environment. The BHT works closely with therapists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to promote recovery and well-being.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide direct care, supervision, and support to individuals with mental health and substance use disorders.
Crisis intervention using de-escalation techniques
Monitor and document patient behaviors, progress, and any incidents in accordance with facility protocols.
Support patients with daily living activities, including hygiene, meals, and transportation, as needed.
Facilitate or assist in therapeutic group activities, recreational programs, and crisis interventions.
Maintain a safe and structured environment by enforcing rules and de-escalating conflicts.
Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including therapists, case managers, and medical staff, to ensure comprehensive patient care.
Educate and support patients in coping strategies, relapse prevention, and healthy living practices.
Uphold confidentiality and ethical standards in compliance with HIPAA and facility guidelines.
Administer and document prescribed medications (if certified and authorized).
Qualifications & Requirements:
High school diploma or GED= Required.
Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, or a related field= Preferred
Experience working in mental health, substance use treatment, or a related field preferred.
Knowledge of behavioral health principles, crisis intervention techniques, and de-escalation strategies.
Strong communication, empathy, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, manage stress, and adapt to patient needs.
Basic computer and documentation skills for electronic health records (EHR).
CPR, First Aid, and CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) certification preferred or required upon hire.
Must pass background check and drug screening as per facility regulations.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
Work may involve standing, walking, lifting, and assisting patients with physical tasks.
Exposure to individuals in crisis, requiring calm and professional intervention.
Flexible scheduling, including nights, weekends, and holidays, may be required.
