The Center for Inpatient Child & Adolescent Psychiatry provides a comprehensive continuum of patient and family-centered care for diverse youth with mental health needs.

About the 2

North Adolescent Unit:

This secured 21-bed psychiatric unit in Somerville Hospital cares for children aged 12-18.It focuses on assessment, stabilization, and post-care treatment planning, with a multidisciplinary team emphasizing self-control, de-escalation, and restraint reduction to provide patient- and family-centered care.

Job Purpose:

The Milieu Counselor, under the supervision of a registered nurse, is responsible for maintaining a safe, structured environment and attending to the individual needs of patients in crisis within an inpatient psychiatric setting.

Responsibilities:

Assist with activities of daily living (ADLs), lead or co-lead group sessions, perform safety checks, and conduct 1:1 meetings with patients.

Accurately chart vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, weight), notify RN of changes, and document intake/output.

Support patients with bathing, laundry, toileting, organizing rooms, and maintaining nutritional and hydration needs.

Perform other tasks as assigned by the charge RN.

Qualifications:

High school diploma required; B.A., B.S., or M.A.preferred, or equivalent human service experience.

Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Previous human services, behavioral, or psychiatric experience preferred, especially inpatient psychiatric experience.

All new hires must successfully complete a job-specific physical test.
