Description
The Nuclear Medicine Technologist under the direction of an authorized physician user, specializes in the diagnostic and therapeutic use of radionuclides. The role involves preparing and administering radiopharmaceuticals to patients through various methods such as injection, oral intake, or inhalation. The technologist is responsible for conducting imaging procedures, processing diagnostic images using specialized equipment, performing laboratory testing, and ensuring the highest standards of patient care through direct interaction with patients. Additionally, the NMT oversees radiation safety, conducts quality control checks on equipment, and ensures the safe handling and disposal of radioactive materials. Continuous professional development through medical and technical education is integral to maintaining and enhancing their skills, ensuring that patients receive high-quality care and diagnostic results.
Essential Functions
Performs exam according to established procedure manual. Selects pre-established technical protocols and sequences for each examination.
Verifies if female patient is or is not pregnant.
Helps with specific procedures as indicated, using sterile technique when applicable.
Communication with patient regarding procedure Patient identification (uses 2 identifiers), Verify orders.
Works calmly under stress and calls for assistance when needed.
Puts in hospital work orders as needed to make sure all equipment is safe. Reports mechanical malfunctions or problems to the Radiology Director as soon as possible.
Receives and processes paperwork such as x-ray request and patient records accurately and in a timely manner. Demonstrates knowledge of computer for verifying orders and or records.
Ascertains an adequate history and diagnosis is given or exam ordered accordingly to established guidelines. Initials and placed on request.
Carries out exam according to policy while maintaining patient safety, comfort and protection.
Shows ability and initiative to modify exams when unable to do standard procedure to obtain diagnostic study.

Education
Technical Program Graduate of a

NMTCB/ARRT

recognized accredited Nuclear Medicine Program
Certification
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from American Heart Association or American Red Cross. And
NMTCB Nuclear Medication Technologist Certification Board OR
ARRT (N) Nuclear Medicine
