EXEMPT Job Summary:

The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) provides comprehensive mental health care to patients of all ages. This role involves diagnosing and managing mental health conditions, developing individualized treatment plans, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary care team to address behavioral health needs in underserved populations.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, including interviews, medical histories, physical exams, observations, and psychological testing. Analyze assessment data to diagnose mental health conditions such as but not limited to anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and substance use disorders. Develop and implement individualized, evidence-based treatment plans to address patients’ mental health needs. Prescribe and manage psychotropic medications, monitoring their efficacy and potential side effects. Adjust treatment plans as needed based on patient progress and clinical outcomes. Provide counseling and psychotherapy, including crisis intervention and stabilization services. Educate patients and families about diagnoses, treatments, medications, and self-care strategies. Address urgent psychiatric needs, offering immediate support and intervention. Work closely with primary care providers, physicians, licensed clinical social workers (LCSW), nurses, and case managers to ensure coordinated care. Communicate effectively with stakeholders regarding patient progress, treatment adjustments, and ongoing care needs. Facilitate referrals to specialty care, inpatient services, or community resources as appropriate. Promote mental health awareness and prevention through education and outreach. Screen patients for mental health conditions, substance use, and suicide risk, providing early intervention as needed. Document all patient encounters, treatment plans, and interventions accurately and in a timely manner using the electronic health record (EHR) system. Ensure compliance with all SCHC and FQHC’s policies, HIPAA regulations, and state-specific psychiatric care guidelines. Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance behavioral health services. Perform additional tasks as needed to support the centers.

Must be able to effectively manage workflow and maintain high-quality standards in environments where staffing levels may be below ideal, demonstrating the ability to prioritize tasks and collaborate with the team under pressure. Ability to use office equipment, including computers, copy machines, fax machines, telephones, calculators, and more. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and related software.

Education and Experience:

Master’s or Doctorate in Nursing with a specialization in Psychiatric-Mental Health. Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner diploma and transcripts is required. Valid Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Florida License. DEA Certification is required. BLS is required

Physical Requirements:

May required to remain on their feet for extended periods. May work in various settings, including but not limited to outpatient clinics and hospitals. Must be able to lift up to 150 pounds to assist fallen residents. May be exposed to adverse indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, blood borne pathogens, physical hazards (e.g., needle pricks, etc.) and chemical hazards. Must be able to travel to various center locations as required.
