  • The Emory Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Movement Disorders Post Graduate Fellowship Program is currently accepting applications for the next cohort. The Fellowship is a one year training program that will train, mentor, and promote expert clinical specialists with a passion for developing a career treating and caring for persons with Parkinson’s
  • Fellowship Program Overview:
  • Nurse Practitioner Fellows train alongside Physician Fellows.

This interprofessional approach prepares graduates to participate in and facilitate collaborative interdisciplinary care. The Nurse Practitioner Fellowship program consists of a minimum of 300 didactic or classroom hours and 1,500 mentored clinical hours. Nurse Practitioner Fellows can generally expect to spend 5 days a week for eight to ten hours a day on-site. Most likely four days will be clinical with one day of administrative work to understand this aspect of Parkinson’s care. This may vary based on activities. Clinical experiences occur in inpatient and ambulatory settings.

The statement of intent is NOT a cover letter and is an important document, which is included in the consideration of your application + Official Transcripts + Current BLS and ACLS certifications issued by the American Heart Association.

  • Candidates who are selected in the first round will be requested to submit the following:

  • Position Summary:
  • The NP Fellow, over the course of the training, must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to patients with movement /disorders. The Fellow must possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to develop each patient’s care requirements.
  • Upon completion of the program the Fellow should be skilled at the following:
  • + Describe the pathophysiology of selected movement disorders + Apply evidence-based medicine in the diagnosis and ongoing provision of quality, cost-effective care for persons with selected movement disorders.

+ Performs physical examinations and specialized diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures. + Diagnose medical problems, develops care plans, and prescribes treatment. + Order and schedule and/or performs laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures as needed. + Collect and interpret diagnostic data to implement appropriate care patient care plans. + Prescribe drugs to treat specific illnesses and reviews medications and treatment modalities for clinical need, simplification and possible adverse reactions to adjust as indicated and applicable. + Administer injections for specific conditions including sialorrhea and + Detect and evaluate for any significant change in patient’s condition, treating as indicated with current evidence-based practice. + Arrange for consultations with or referrals to other medical professionals or community services as needed. + Select, administer, and interpret established rating scales to assess and monitor the clinical status of persons with selected movement disorders. + Design and present an educational offering for persons, families, communities, or professionals focused on a specific aspect of a selected movement disorder that is cognizant of the social, emotional, physical and cultural needs of participants + Demonstrate organizational skills in the management of a panel of persons with selected movement disorder + Display effective communication and presentation skills as a member of the interprofessional team + Be able to define how and when the administration of botulinum toxin injections are needed, as well as explain the side effects, when to refer, and how to manage problems for persons with selected movement disorders + Differentiate the roles and responsibilities of clinical trial research team members + Formulate, implement, and evaluate a plan for continuity of care for a person with a selected movement disorder that includes liaison and coordination with community agencies and healthcare professionals + DBS programming, intra-operative micro recording observation and Duopa management + Educate patients on health habits, self-examinations, behavior management, need for follow-up assessments/treatments, at home medical care, medication and other issues related to medical or health problems. + Provide independent outpatient care in clinic in partnership with our physicians and other providers. + Document the delivery of care in the individual’s medical records.

  • Core Professional Duties of the
Fellowship:
  • + Works with manager to formulate plan for professional development + Attends educational in-services as appropriate.

+ Participates in professional activities and organizations to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments. + Actively participates on organizational health services committees and performs related responsibilities as required +

Requirement:

Be on back-up call once a month, to allow for full scope practice as part of the training experience. +

Outreach and Education:

Engage in community service and outreach, including support groups, education seminars for the public and service to the underserved local community.

  • The curriculum consists of a graded increase in clinical responsibility and decision-making
  • beginning with direct patient care, which is aligned with educational activities.
Educational activities include:
  • + Self-learning modules (completed before or during Q1 of fellowship) + PF Fundamentals of PD Course +
PF The Expert Care Experience:

Role of Nurses in Caring for People with Parkinson’s + PF Caring for Your Patients with Atypical Parkinsonism + PF Pelvic Rehabilitation and Parkinson’s disease + Nurse Practitioner Fellows should complete the clinical research coordinator trial coordinator foundation course in the CITI Program.

  • Conferences to attend in person:
  • + Comprehensive Aspen Movement Disorders Course (required July 2026) + PF Team Training three-day program required during fellowship (required Oct 2026) + NP Fellows would be invited to attend the annual PF Centers Leadership Conference as part of their education fund in fall 2026. (Optional)
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • + Graduate degree from an accredited school of nursing as a Primary Care Adult-Gerontology or Family Nurse Practitioner + Minimum GPA of 3.

0 on 4.0 scale + National board certification in Nurse Practitioner specialty + Licensed as an Advanced Practice Nurse in the state of Georgia by the Georgia Board of Nursing and certified as a Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or equivalent body. Licenses at least four months prior to the start of the program year (September 1) + BLS and Healthcare Provider certifications required. ACLS may be required in some areas. + Drug Enforcement Administration provider number + National Provider Identification number + Minimum of three years clinical experience as a registered nurse. + Minimum of one year experience as a nurse practitioner, preferred
