NURSE PRACTITIONER POSITION SUMMARY
The Nurse Practitioner utilizes the medical model to meet a variety of healthcare needs with ambulatory care as their primary focus in a correctional environment. The Physician’s Assistant works with a variety of healthcare professionals/security officers in a correctional environment to provide basic medical services supervised by a licensed Physician.
NURSE PRACTITIONER ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Responds to and initiates care for medical emergencies throughout the facility. Identifies patient health problems and prescribes treatment under the direction of a physician. Implements medical care utilizing therapeutic regimens approved by a Physician. Provides education to inmate/patient, healthcare staff, and correctional staff. Documents all healthcare contacts. Adheres to safety and security policies and participates in disaster drills. Follows security regulations for keys, sharps, and controlled medications. Delegates to and supervises other team members as appropriate. Adheres to Universal Precautions and other appropriate infection control practices. Attends training and meetings as required.
NURSE PRACTITIONER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Graduate of an accredited college/university NP program Must possess current licenses or certifications in the state of employment Experience in Correctional desired but not required Maintains required annual licensure and credentialing requirements for physician assistants / Nurse Practitioner in the healthcare unit.
