Position:

Full Time, salaried, non-union, exempt.

JOB FUNCTIONS

The Family Nurse Practitioner (“FNP”) will practice medicine using sound medical judgment and adhere to all ethical considerations of the practice of medicine; know limitations and seek consult when advisable; keep abreast of current technologies and industry standards. Meet all clinical obligations of the medical practice including, but not limited to, licensing compliance, drug prescription compliance, HIPAA, State and Federal regulations, safety regulations, etc. Follow all internal policies and procedures. The FNP will be accountable for completion of all operational tasks according to departmental guidelines to ensure appropriate clinical processing/documentation. Advise the Director of Physician Practices of any issues that may impact the practice. Begin work on time. See patients in a timely and efficient manner; strive to stay on time for scheduled appointments in the practice throughout the day, unless exceptional circumstances occur. Patient relations, consumer satisfaction and long standing practice goals of staying on time necessitate this important consideration. The financial viability of the practice requires that all providers be held accountable for their actions with regard to proper coding and appropriate charging for all services rendered. Charting in the patient’s medical record is routinely expected to be completed on the same day as the patient’s visit. Obtains complete medical history from patient, and/or family, and/or previous medical record, etc. Reconciles and prescribes medications according to therapeutic goals, explains treatment to patients, and families.
Teaches and counsels patients and families.
Assesses, diagnosis, implements treatment, evaluates and monitors patients’ health status. Performs complete physical examinations on patients. Orders and interprets results of routine and diagnostic lab and x-ray studies. Diagnosis acute and chronic illness on the basis of clinical findings, laboratory and x-ray reports and/or the results of other diagnostic procedures according to approved protocols and clinical standards. Formulates initiates and monitors patient management plans for patients assigned to the Family Nurse Practitioner, using protocols and/or consultation with a supervising physician. Refers patients requiring hospitalization or assessment and management of conditions to supervising physicians or appropriate specialist. Follows patient’s progress with physician. Consults with physicians and other members of the health care team as necessary.
Performs other necessary duties as required by the community health center to meet the goal of providing primary health care services. Serve as educational preceptor for the clinical staff and trainees to include teaching and clinical Supervision. Assist in the expanding the competencies of the clinical staff. Plan and teach in-services.
Perform other duties as assigned. Will work with an interpreter if the need arises.

Quality Improvement:

Actively participates in the Hospital-wide Quality Improvement Program, actively supports and implements Department-specific Quality improvement initiatives and projects, recommends process improvement as appropriate, reports any quality issues in service delivery and consistently commits to a focus on quality improvement and organizational excellence.

Emergency/Disaster Preparedness:

As an employee of Penobscot Valley Hospital, the position has an inherent role to care for our community members when in need. To this regard, the incumbent will be expected to participate in emergency/disaster preparedness planning and drills as requested. When called upon during a real life disaster/emergency event, the incumbent will be expected to participate in the Hospital’s response to this event, within the scope of professional and personal ability to do so. Requirements
Current Maine RN license. Specialty licensed as Nurse Practitioner with 3 or more years of experience preferred. Graduated from accredited school of nursing and a Nurse Practitioner program recognized by the Board of Nursing or from a program otherwise designated for Family Nurse Practitioners which has been approved by the State Board of Nursing. Board Certification or Eligibility for Board Certification. Ability to obtain licensure of practice in Maine. Credentialing ability on all professional levels. Maintains current BLS certification. Preferred training or experience in rural health care and pediatrics.
