General Description:
This is a professional position. The incumbent serves as the administrative and clinical lead for the agency’s medical/nursing services. The incumbent performs outpatient psychiatric medical evaluations and assessments, provides medication management and follow-up treatment for persons with mental illness and those with dual or multi-diagnoses (to include substance use disorders and/or developmental disabilities).
Organization:
The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner reports to a Division Director and supervises nursing staff and telehealth provider(s). Clinical and administrative supervision will be provided as necessary based on experience and ability to practice independently.
Essential Functions:
Supervises employees, performing related human resources functions and completing necessary paperwork.
Provides clinical and administrative oversight of nursing services.
Performs psychiatric assessments and evaluations.
Determines diagnoses and carries out the necessary and appropriate treatment plan. Provides crisis intervention/emergency psychiatric services.
Participates in formulation of treatment plans and signs off as needed. Maintains medical records according to agency standards.
Consults with families, medical and agency personnel regarding physical and emotional problems.
Provides consultation, education and training services to individuals and agency staff on medical issues by review of case presentations, disposition meetings, and collaboration in treatment planning.
Provides psychotropic medication prescriptions and management.
Review and provide guidance for updating medical services operating guidelines.

Exempt Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of principles, standards, practices and techniques related to psychiatry, psychiatric illness and wellness. General medical knowledge pertinent to differential diagnosis. Knowledge of substance abuse assessment and interventions and impacts to treatment of persons with serious mental illness. Knowledge of developmental disabilities and the impacts of co-occurring mental health conditions. Ability to implement trauma-informed practices. Skilled in consultation and collaboration with other professionals. Ability to provide psychiatric evaluations and treatment, communicate effectively, demonstrate cultural competence, establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals served, family members, physicians and agency staff. Skilled in maintaining electronic medical records. Ability to provide clinical oversight, identify program goals, and monitor service delivery. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to act independently and make decisions in critical situations.
Education, Experience and Training:
Master’s degree from an accredited nurse practitioner program acceptable to the Virginia Joint Board of Nursing and Medicine, which grants licensure for nurse practitioners; or a Master’s degree from an accredited nursing program with a post-graduate nurse practitioner certificate. A minimum of three (3) years of related experience working with persons with serious and persistent mental illness, substance use disorders, and developmental disabilities, required; licensed to practice autonomously of physician supervision preferred; experience working in community-based setting preferred. Any equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training sufficient to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable. Must possess and maintain a current license as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician’s Assistant with prescriptive authority issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
