DukeUniversity Hospital / NICU Job Summary The Neonatal APP providesdirect patient care services and performs medical procedures underthe supervision of a supervisory physician to infants (birththrough 2 years of age) in specialized neonatal units to includeIntensive Care Nurseries, Intermediate Care Nurseries, and theSpecial Care Nurseries in the Duke University Health System. TheNeonatal APP performs physical exams, collects and documents data,conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders andschedules laboratory studies and professional consultations,prescribes appropriate interventions and medications, and providesdirect patient care services. The NNP contributes to excellence inpatient care, research, teaching, and provides leadership in theorganization. Job Duties and Responsibilities
- In collaborationwith the attending of service and/or fellows, round daily onpatients to assess, diagnose, plan treatment, set priorities andrealistic outcomes, and evaluate the effectiveness and costefficiency of patient care.
- Provide and coordinate clinical carefor service-specific patients through established protocols underthe hospitalist supervising physician or backup physician, who iseither on site or available by pager.
- Collaborate with fellows,attending, other APP colleagues, nurses, and patient resourcemanagers to formulate treatment plans and monitor patient progress
- Perform procedures specific to the work environment afterdemonstrated competency and within the guidelines of scope ofpractice and credentialing protocols.
- Assess patients for achange in status and institute appropriate interventions. Initiateemergency interventions to stabilize the patient until physiciansupport arrives.
- Post-procedural stabilization and management.
- Develop patient care pathways, protocols, and guidelines formanaging specific problems in conjunction with physicians and othermembers of the health care team.
- Communicate verbally and inwriting all pertinent patient information to the supervising MD,nursing staff, patient resource manager, home health agency, andother relevant healthcare providers.
- Document in the patients’medical records all relevant data, including, but not limited to,diagnostic test results, laboratory results, patients’ conditionand response to therapies/interventions, and communications withthe supervising MD.
- Prescriptive authority for prescribing,ordering, and/or administering drugs, including (but not limitedto) schedule II, III, IV, and V drugs and necessary medicaldevices.
- Role model competence in all nursepractitioner/physician assistant advanced skills.
- Give dailyhandoff to appropriate attending, APP, or fellow at the end of theshift.
- Assess educational needs of the patient-care staff andprovide one-on-one and formal education as needed.
- Assess theeducational needs of the patients/families and provide culturallysensitive patient/family education interventions as indicated.
Usenon-technical language when educating patients and families.
Document all education in patients’ medical records.
- Implementand evaluate appropriate educational programs for DUHS patient carestaff and other healthcare providers as appropriate.
- Role modeland precept healthcare learners through contractual agreements.
- Utilize current research and evidence-based decision-making in allclinical practice.
- Incorporate clinical research findings in thedevelopment and implementation of standards of care.
- Participatein interdisciplinary quality improvement and/or researchactivities.
- Provide expertise and resource information to otherhealthcare providers, patients and families, and the community atlarge related to pediatric diseases, procedures, interventions, andconditions.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate standards ofcare/practice guidelines/policies and procedures/caremaps/protocols within the area of specialization.
- Maintain allprofessional requirements for licensure and certification.

Graduate of an accredited
MSN or DNP Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Program PA:
Graduate of anaccredited Master’s Degree or Doctoral Degree Physician AssistantProgram plus a

1 year PA experience through neonatal fellowship oras a neonatal provider Job Hours Primary hours will be rotational,covering 24 hours / 7 days per week, including nights, weekends,and holidays. The Neonatal APP must also be flexible to provideon-call coverage, as needed.
