Summary:

The Advanced Practice Provider will provide medical care for patients. These services will be performed under the direct supervision of the Infectious Disease doctor for Nash UNC Infectious Disease and/or designated backup physicians under North Carolina Law.

The Advanced Practice Provider will provide medical care to patients in the UNC Health Nash setting or the Nash Infectious Disease clinic. The Advanced Care Provider will be involved with the care of the patient in any role which the supervising physician deems proper and consistent with applicable law, hospital regulations, and delineation of privileges, in combination with training, knowledge, skill, and experience of the Advanced Practice Provider. At no time will the Advanced Practice Provider order medications, provide care, or order/perform diagnostic tests outside the scope of practice of the Advanced Practice Provider or the supervising physician.

Supervising Physician/Back-up Physician will be available for the Advanced Practice Provider at all times via telephone or pager. These numbers are kept on file in the Medical Staff Office as well as with the hospital’s operators.

Responsibilities:

1. Maintains an environment of safety for patients, self, and others. 2. Performs a complete evaluation on new patients and consults.3. Performs focused history, chief complaint for all follow-up patient visits.4. Formulates new and modifies current health management plan.5. Evaluates and reevaluates patient’s condition and makes recommendations accordingly.6. Prescribes medications.7. Educates and counsels.8. Maintains medical records.9. Coordination of care10. Makes patient referrals as needed.11. Makes judgements about patient census.12. Provides quality care.13. Manages patient care requirements.14. Functions as a float team member when needed.15. Completes discharge paperwork.16. Works with other Heart Center providers.17. Demonstrates the ability to handle multiple patient care need requests.18. Supervises patients for Pharmacological and Treadmill Stress Tests.19. Completes and manages EHR documentation.20. Keeps continuing education, licenses, and/or certifications current.21. Complies with policies and procedures.

Other information:

Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s in nursing from an approved nursing program for an NP
  • Masters in nursing with completion of a post graduate certificate Nurse Practitioner program or Masters Other Nurse Practitioner program or Postmaster’s Nurse Practitioner Program
  • Preferred Education for Physician Assistant, the required education is as follows: Bachelor’s degree from an approved, accredited physician assistant program and certificate.

If licensed in North Carolina after June 1, 1994, has successfully completed a licensing examination.

Professional Experience Requirements:
  • 4 years of experience in Healthcare/Medical-Healthcare-Other as a
Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner License/Certification Requirements:
  • RN-Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina
  • Nurse Practitioner-Current license to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in North Carolina
  • National certification as a Nurse Practitioner
  • Physician Assistant-Current certification to practice as a Physician Assistant
  • BCLS-Recertification required every 2 years
  • ACLS-Recertification required every 2 years
