21.00 – 31.50 Job Summary The Lead MedicationAssistant (MA) serves as an experienced caregiver who providesresident-centered nursing care and daily living assistance toassigned residents under the supervision of a charge nurse. As alead, will assist in delegating tasks and overseeing work of othermedication assistants. Serves as a subject matter expert and teamresource. Leads the team in problem solving and decision making.

Establishes and maintains a high accountability. Often works onadditional projects for nurses and leadership. Knowledge of anddelivers age-appropriate care related to the physical andpsychological needs of the resident per plan of care. Providesassistance with basic health care needs including daily livingactivities that may include, but are not limited to, bathing,toileting, grooming, dressing/undressing, obtaining and recordingvital signs, and providing psycho-social support and other personalcare to assigned resident. May assist the resident in transferring,re-positioning, and walking using correct and appropriate transfertechniques and equipment and provides range of motion and passiveexercises. Completes tasks related to food preparation and dining,while creating a positive dining experience for the resident. Mayassist residents with meals and snacks; provide water andsupplements as appropriate. Administers prescribed medications asdelegated by a licensed nurse and within their scope of practice asdefined by state regulations. Documents the outcomes related toresident care, medication administration, behavior, activity, anddietary. Communicates changing condition, medication follow-up andcare related concerns/responses to the charge nurse. Collectsnon-invasive body fluid specimens and gathers vital signs. Provideshousekeeping and laundry services to assist residents with keepingliving areas clean and operational. Provides assistance anddocumentation with wellness and recreational programs andencourages residents to participate. Qualifications High schoolgraduate or general equivalency diploma (GED) preferred, but notrequired. Minimum age of 18 preferred. Three years of clinical ornursing assistant experience in assisted living or long-term carepreferred. Satisfactorily completes yearly department specificcompetency testing and maintains a record of continuing educationcredits for each year. A minimum of 12 hours continuing educationare required annually based on state requirements. Maintains alldepartment specific required certifications. When applicable, mayneed a valid driver’s license and auto insurance.

Iowa:

RequireCertified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with the StateBoard of Nursing. CNA certification must be maintained with theState Board of Nursing. Successful completion of a state-approvedCertified Medication Aide/Assistant course once CNA certificationis obtained.

Minnesota:

Must have nursing assistant certification,have completed the 75-hour course and be registered with theMinnesota Nursing Assistant Registry. Successful completion of astate-approved Trained Medication Assistant course.

North Dakota:

Require Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with theState Board of Nursing. CNA certification must be maintained withthe State Board of Nursing. Successful completion of astate-approved Certified Medication Aide/Assistant course once CNAcertification is obtained. If working in an Assisted Living orBasic Care facility, Medication Assistant I certification required.

If working in a skilled nursing facility, Medication Assistant IIcertification is required.

South Dakota:

Must successfully completethe state approved Certified Medication Aide (CMA) course. CMAcertification must be maintained with the State Board of Nursing.
