18.50 – 28.00 Job Summary The MedicationAssistant (MA) serves as caregiver who provides resident-centerednursing care and daily living assistance to assigned residentsunder the supervision of a charge nurse. Knowledge of and deliversage-appropriate care related to the physical and psychologicalneeds of the resident per plan of care. Provides assistance withbasic health care needs including daily living activities that mayinclude, but are not limited to, bathing, toileting, grooming,dressing/undressing, obtaining and recording vital signs, andproviding psycho-social support and other personal care to assignedresident. May assist the resident in transferring, re-positioning,and walking using correct and appropriate transfer techniques andequipment and provides range of motion and passive exercises.

Completes tasks related to food preparation and dining, whilecreating a positive dining experience for the resident. May assistresidents with meals and snacks; provide water and supplements asappropriate. Administers prescribed medications as delegated by alicensed nurse and within their scope of practice as defined bystate regulations. Documents the outcomes related to resident care,medication administration, behavior, activity, and dietary.

Communicates changing condition, medication follow-up and carerelated concerns/responses to the charge nurse. Collectsnon-invasive body fluid specimens and gathers vital signs. Provideshousekeeping and laundry services to assist residents with keepingliving areas clean and operational. Provides assistance anddocumentation with wellness and recreational programs andencourages residents to participate. Qualifications High schoolgraduate or general equivalency diploma (GED) preferred, but notrequired. Minimum age of 18 preferred. Prior clinical or nursingassistant experience preferred. Satisfactorily completes yearlydepartment specific competency testing and maintains a record ofcontinuing education credits for each year. A minimum of 12 hourscontinuing education are required annually based on staterequirements. Maintains all department specific requiredcertifications. When applicable, may need a valid driver’s licenseand auto insurance.

Iowa:

Require Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)certification with the State Board of Nursing. CNA certificationmust be maintained with the State Board of Nursing. Successfulcompletion of a state-approved Certified Medication Aide/Assistantcourse once CNA certification is obtained.

Minnesota:

Must havenursing assistant certification, have completed the 75-hour courseand be registered with the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry.

Successful completion of a state-approved Trained MedicationAssistant course.

North Dakota:

Require Certified Nursing Assistant(CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing. CNAcertification must be maintained with the State Board of Nursing.

Successful completion of a state-approved Certified MedicationAide/Assistant course once CNA certification is obtained. Ifworking in an Assisted Living or Basic Care facility, MedicationAssistant I certification required. If working in a skilled nursingfacility, Medication Assistant II certification is required.

SouthDakota:

Must successfully complete the state approved CertifiedMedication Aide (CMA) course. CMA certification must be maintainedwith the State Board of Nursing. For all
