Job Summary TheMedication Assistant (MA) serves as caregiver who providesresident-centered nursing care and daily living assistance toassigned residents under the supervision of a charge nurse.
Knowledge of and delivers age-appropriate care related to thephysical and psychological needs of the resident as per plan ofcare. Provides assistance with basic health care needs includingdaily living activities that may include, but are not limited to,bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing/undressing, obtaining andrecording vital signs, and providing psycho-social support andother personal care to assigned resident. May assist the residentin transferring, re-positioning, and walking using correct andappropriate transfer techniques and equipment and provides range ofmotion and passive exercises. Completes tasks related to foodpreparation and dining, while creating a positive dining experiencefor the resident. May assist residents with meals and snacks;provide water and supplements as appropriate. Administersprescribed medications as delegated by a licensed nurse and withintheir scope of practice as defined by state regulations. Documentsthe outcomes related to resident care, medication administration,behavior, activity, and dietary. Communicates changing condition,medication follow-up and care related concerns/responses to thecharge nurse. Collects non-invasive body fluid specimens andgathers vital signs. Provides housekeeping and laundry services toassist residents with keeping living areas clean and operational.
Provides assistance and documentation with wellness andrecreational programs and encourages residents to participate. Mayparticipate in departmental/organization committees and task forcesas needed. Qualifications High school graduate or generalequivalency diploma (GED) preferred, but not required. Minimum ageof 18 preferred. Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience inlong-term care preferred. Satisfactorily completes yearlydepartment specific competency testing and maintains a record ofcontinuing education credits for each year. A minimum of 12 hourscontinuing education are required annually based on staterequirements. Maintains all department specific requiredcertifications. When applicable, may need a valid driver’s licenseand auto insurance.
Iowa:
Require Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)certification with the State Board of Nursing. CNA certificationmust be maintained with the State Board of Nursing. Successfulcompletion of a state-approved Certified Medication Aide/Assistantcourse once CNA certification is obtained.
Minnesota:
Must havenursing assistant certification, have completed the 75-hour courseand be registered with the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry.
Successful completion of a state-approved Trained MedicationAssistant course.
North Dakota:
Require Certified Nursing Assistant(CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing. CNAcertification must be maintained with the State Board of Nursing.
Successful completion of a state-approved Certified MedicationAide/Assistant course once CNA certification is obtained. Ifworking in an Assisted Living or Basic Care facility, MedicationAssistant I certification required. If working in a skilled nursingfacility, Medication Assistant II certification is required.
SouthDakota:
