PURPOSE OF POSITION
Under supervision, provides professional nursing care to patients/clients within an assigned unit. Diagnoses and treats responses to actual or potential health problems by means of nursing methods and techniques such as case-finding, health teaching, health counseling and provision of care supportive to and restorative of life and well-being.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Nursing Care -Med-Surg Units
SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Assigns staff to deliver care using the team nursing approach and based on the acuity level of patients.
2. Insures the completeness of admission assessments of patients admitted during the tour.
3. Actively participates in planning the care of patients on the unit and evaluates this care.
4. Assists in coordinating medical, nursing and other health care team activities on patients.
5. Prepares staffing schedule for the unit on the assigned tour under the guidance of the supervisor.
6. Insures participation of staff on the assigned tour in the use of the nursing process on patients; assessment, planning specific intervention activities, patient teaching and discharge planning.
7. Provides direct nursing care as needed for patient Leadership/Management of Unit
1. Assists supervisor and head nurse in providing direction and guidance to staff of medical unit.
2. Demonstrates, flexibility and adaptability to changes in work assignment and staff availability.
3. Acts as role model and insures staff compliance to department of nursing, policies and procedures,infection control and fire and safety regulations.
4. Participates in quality assurance monitoring activities.
5. Utilizes appropriate lines of communication in reporting pertinent information about patients, families and staff.
6. Assists the head nurse in coordinating unit routines. Safety Awareness
1. Insures the readiness and availability of code blue carts at all times.
2. Demonstrates competence in code blues.
3. Insures participation of staff in-services and observance of safety regulation.
4. Assists the head nurse in identifying safety hazards in the unit and reports these to appropriate authorities in a timely fashion.
5. Enforces infection control policies and procedures. Self-Development
1. Assumes responsibility for seeking continuing education.
2. Attends nursing related educational programs both inside and outside the hospital.
3. Seeks assistance from Supervisor and/or head nurse as needed in solving clinical and management problems. Personnel Policies and Procedures
1. Observes attendance and punctuality regulations of the nursing department.
2. Conforms to uniform code of nursing department and wear identification badge at all times.
5. Observes and ensures staff compliance to hospital policies on patient rights and confidentiality. Minimum Qualifications 1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA); and
