Job Summary Under the general supervision and direction of theNurse manager or designated Charge Nurse, works in collaborationwith the surgeon and other health care team members to achieveoptimal patient outcomes. The RN First Assist will have acquiredthe necessary knowledge, judgment and skills specific to theexpanded role of RNFA clinical practice; intraoperatively practicesat the direction of the surgeon; and does not concurrently functionas a scrub person. Core Job Responsibilities Collects patienthealth data relevant to the operative or invasive procedurethroughout the perioperative continuum. Preoperatively performs afocused nursing assessment in reference to planned procedure.
Intraoperatively assesses patient, wound, and sterile field.
Monitors and assesses patient’s postoperative status to determineprogress toward expected outcomes or signs and symptoms ofpostoperative complications. Analyzes the assessment data todetermine nursing diagnosis. Formulates and modifies nursingdiagnoses based on relevant patient data throughout theperioperative continuum s applicable to RNFA interventions.
Identifies and communicates desired patient outcomes throughout theperioperative continuum. Establishes individualized outcomes incollaboration with patient, designated support person or healthcare providers based on the identified nursing diagnoses asapplicable to RNFA interventions. Develops and manages anindividualized plan of care that directs the interventions of theRNFA. Establishes individualized outcomes in collaboration withpatient, designated support person or health care providers basedon the identified nursing diagnoses as applicable to RNFAinterventions. Analyzes and modifies poster operative patientoutcomes compared to baseline nursing assessment. Implements,manages, and coordinates the perioperative plan of care related toRNFA interventions. Coordinates and manages patient care throughoutthe perioperative continuum consistent with RNFA practice.
Delegates tasks and functions according to organizational policy,applicable laws, regulations, and standards, taking intoconsideration the competency of the assignee. Applies nursingknowledge as the basis for effective problem solving and decisionmaking when providing perioperative patient care. Verifiesoperative procedure, surgical site, and laterality. Participates inpositioning the patient in collaboration with the surgeon,anesthesia professional, and other members of the perioperativeteam. Functions as first assistant to the primary surgeon duringoperative or other invasive procedures and throughout theperioperative continuum in accordance with scope of practice,credentials, privileges, education and experience. Minimizes thelength of the operative or invasive procedure and maximizessurgeons’s efficiency of movement within the surgical wound.
Implements and maintains sterile technique to prevent patientexposure to microorganisms and other particulates. Protects patientfrom thermal, electrical, chemical, or mechanical injury throughoutthe perioperative continuum. Implements homeostasis techniques.
Implements measures to prevent injury related to retained surgicalitems. Makes postoperative rounds in conjunction with or at thedirection of the surgeon as determined by health care organizationpolicy and guidelines of practice. Provides individualized patient,designated support person, or health care provider educationregarding identified needs related to RNFA interventions.
Education/Experience Requirements Licensed as a Registered Nursewith the State of New York. Current ACLS certification. Graduate ofa recognized RNFA program. Licensure/Certification RequirementsCurrent ACLS certification. Graduate of a recognized RNFA program.
