Videos Duties Nursing Assistant – Major duties include but are not limited to : Recognizes the normal aging process and responds to meet the age specific needs of the Veterans including sensory/perceptual changes and physical needs for food, wer, air. eliminion, rest sleep and activity. Assists residents with personal care and other duties or care as directed such as bhing, personal hygiene, assisting with feeding, taking / recording vital signs, and assisting with ambulion. Provide resident centered – care, which is driven by the needs, preferences, and lifelong habits of the residents. Care is individualized to each resident, and the resident is a participant in their own care when possible. Correctly identifies Veterans by using two specific personal identifiers. Provides timely verbal reports regarding results of care or changes in Veteran’s condition to the RN. Documents nursing care according to established nursing policy and procedures, in the written pient care books and/or in the electronic nursing care programs known as Caribou and/or CPRS. Keeps informed of all policies and procedures, guidelines, directives and regulions. Utilizes proper body mechanics, lifting devices and assistance from coworkers in performance of Veteran care activities. Reiteres and reinforces teaching and instructions th were previously presented by the RN. Provides care for those Veterans transported to facilities outside of VA Butler Healthcare. Contributes to work area conferences. Inities emergency action in life threening situions such as cardiac and / or respirory arrest and alerts licensed personnel immediely. Utilizes equipment, merials and supplies in simple diagnostic and trement procedures. Monitors bowel and bladder functioning, tracking of intake and output. Administers specified skin trements and comfort items such as ointments, solutions, lotions, and powders per applicable policy and procedure in compliance with Bar Code Medicion Administrion system (BCMA). Administers retention and non-retention enemas as well as rectal suppositories for purpose of lower bowel evacuion. Administers non-mediced eye drops used for comfort measures. Provides assigned respirory care support services including the applicion and regulion of oxygen. Other duties as assigned.

You must meet one of the following to meet the basic requirements for a Nursing Assistant (NA): Six (6) months of general experience. Experience must demonstre the ability to acquire the knowledge and skills to perform the work of a NA; OR, One year of educion above high school with courses reled to the NA occupion; OR, Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupion-reled training course of study or program of less than one year as a NA may also meet in full the experience requirements for GS-3.
Grade Determinions :
In addition to the basic requirements sted above, the following qualificion criteria must be met for each grade. The candide’s qualificions must clearly demonstre the level of competence required for the grade. GS-03 – None beyond the basic requirements. NAs this grade NAs are considered entry-level and are closely supervised. GS-04 – To qualify the GS-4 level you must meet the following:
EXPERIENCE
One (1) year of experience as a Nursing Assistant or in another medical field (licensed practical nurse, health technician, hospital corpsman, etc.), performing technical and nursing skills requiring knowledge of the human physical and emotional stes, therapeutic communicion, and technical skills required for basic and intermedie trements.
OR, EDUCATION
Successful completion of two (2) years above high school in an accredited institution with courses reled to nursing care, health care or in a field of study approprie to the specializion of the position, such as educion in a program for psychology, psychiric, or opering room technicians. AND, in addition you must demonstre the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs): Ability to provide a range of pient/resident care and contribute to the completion of the nurse care plan and recovery of pients/residents. Ability to observe pients/residents’ or residents’ physical or emotional stus and refer deviions and/or problems to supervisor in a timely manner. Ability to properly use equipment, merials and supplies in simple diagnostic and trement procedures such as bladder scan, continuous passive motion device, blood glucose monitoring machine, specimen collection, etc. Ability to communice effectively with pients/residents, their families and other health professionals. EXPERIENCE
One (1) year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level which demonstres knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) th are directly reled to the specific assignment. Specialized experience includes but is not limited to functioning as a member of the nursing care team and assisting licensed nursing staff and other members of the care team in the full range of nursing care of pients/residents receiving outpient care, home, or community living care or other pients/residents who are receiving preventive, acute, sub-acute, chronic, maintenance, and hospice care.
OR, EDUCATION
Successful completion of 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor’s degree th included 24 semester hours of courses reled to health care or possession of a bachelor’s degree. AND, in addition you must demonstre the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs): Ability to assist in the full range of nursing care to pients/residents with physical and/or behavioral problems in a hospital, long-term care or outpient setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Vocional Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse. Ability to communice orally with pients/residents, families, interdisciplinary team and other personnel. This includes serving as a preceptor to new NAs by assisting with the coordinion of their oriention and overseeing/assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting. Ability to recognize and react to emergent pient/resident care situions and intervene while waiting for assistance. For example, recognizing need for basic life support, controlling bleeding and assisting with behavior crisis, etc.
