Teaching Full Job Description TITLE:

Academic Team Leader (Humanities or STEM)

REPORTS TO

Director of Teaching and Learning

POSITION TYPE

Full-time

SCHEDULE

10-month per year position at 40 hours per week

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITY

The Academic Team Leader serves as a key instructional leader, providing strategic direction and support within a designated content area (Humanities or STEM). Reporting to the Director of Teaching and Learning, the Academic Team Leader is responsible for facilitating professional learning, instructional coaching, and school-wide instructional leadership. This role supports the development and implementation of effective curriculum and assessment practices, ensures alignment with school-wide instructional priorities, and may lead special academic initiatives that promote continuous improvement and student success.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership:

Serve as a member of the leadership team, representing the instructional priorities and practices of the school. Promote a growth mindset and a culture of reflective practice and continuous improvement. Guide strategic planning and instructional priorities within designated departments. Lead initiatives aligned with the school’s mission, including academic equity and readiness for college and careers. Oversee or contribute to school-wide special academic projects, pilots, and initiatives.

Professional Learning & Coaching:

Facilitate departmental Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and content-specific professional development. Provide individual and group instructional coaching, aligned to teacher goals and school-wide instructional practices. In collaboration with the Director of Teaching and Learning, plan and facilitate school-wide academic professional learning. Support teachers with the design and refinement of curriculum units and lesson plans using research-based instructional strategies. Collect, maintain, and analyze teacher and student data to inform instructional priorities, learning, and coaching. Provide actionable feedback based on classroom observations and student performance data. Support onboarding and mentorship of new teachers within the content area.

Curriculum & Assessment Oversight:

Ensure alignment of curriculum and assessments with standards, instructional goals, and school mission. Use student performance data to inform instructional improvements and departmental strategy. Collaborate with the Director of Teaching and Learning to monitor and respond to academic performance trends. Implement and support schoolwide assessment initiatives and ensure consistency in grading and instructional expectations.

Collaboration & Departmental Support:

Serve on the MTSS team to ensure student-centered support structures are integrated into academic planning. Collaborate across departments to promote interdisciplinary learning and shared strategies. Communicate regularly with all stakeholders regarding instructional practices, outcomes, and needs.

Other:

Attend all school-mandated professional events, including planning days, PD sessions, conferences, open houses, and graduation. Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Teaching and Learning, Principal, or Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field (Master’s degree preferred) Minimum of five (5) years of teaching experience in the designated content area; leadership or coaching experience preferred Demonstrated ability to lead teams, analyze data, and drive instructional improvement Experience in urban education or charter school settings preferred Strong written and verbal communication skills Commitment to the school’s mission and belief in the potential of every student

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Duties are typically performed in a classroom or school environment. Occasional evening or weekend responsibilities may be required. Noise level is generally moderate.

EVALUATION

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the Nurses Middle College policy on evaluation of staff.
