Job Description SummaryMUSC Children’s Health After Hours CareMt. Pleasant is a pediatric outpatient clinic that falls under theShawn Jenkin’s Children’s Hospital at MUSC. During the day, we hosta variety of pediatric subspecialists such as pediatric pulmonary,GI, endocrinology, only to name a few. In addition to that, weprovide a walk-in After Hours Care, which is a direct extension ofour pediatric emergency department to serve our community duringthe hours when most pediatricians are closed.

Under the direct supervision of aRegistered Nurse, the Certified Medical Assistant performsmulti-skilled activities to support a decentralizedpatient-centered approach to patient care and achieve desiredoutcomes. Assists in examination and treatment of patients underthe direction of a physician. Interviews patients, measures vitalsigns (i.e., pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, andheight), and records or inputs information to patients’ medicalrecord. Prepares treatment rooms for examination of patients.

Minimum Training and Education:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Completion of an accredited medical assisting program with one yearof patient care experience preferred. Basic computer skillsrequired. Annual competencies are required to be maintained.

Possess ability to understand and implement a variety of detailedinstructions in the execution of therapeutic procedures and abilityto make accurate physical observation of patients. Failure to abideby MUHA policies are subject to disciplinary action, includingtermination. Employee must possess considerable knowledge of basicmedical terminology and human anatomy; ability to understand andimplement a variety of detailed instructions in the execution ofcomplex therapeutic procedures; and ability to make accuratephysical observation of patients. Must communicate effectively bothverbally and in writing.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations:

Must becertified through the American Medical Technologist (AMT) orAmerican Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or NationalHealth career Association (NHA) or MedCA as a Certified Clinical &Administrative Medical Assistant (MA1), or National Association forHealth Professionals (NAHP), or National Center for CompetencyTesting (NCCT). Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either acertification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS forHealthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an AmericanRed Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and HealthcareProvider.

LPN Summary:

Provides patient/family centered care, actingas partner and adviser, assists and supports patients and familiesto optimally manage their health care, respecting their culture andvalues, individual needs, health goals and treatment preferences.

Applies critical reasoning and astute clinical judgment in order toexpedite appropriate care and treatment, especially given that thepatient may be present with complex problems or potentially lifethreatening conditions. Uses critical thinking in clinicalproblem-solving relative to the scope of practice, knowledge,competency, and experience. Assists medical staff with preparation,examination, and procedure to include interviewing/screeningpatients to obtain personal data and chief complaint, documentationfor records, and vital signs. Performs telephone and in-personscreenings. Participates in recording and reportingresponsibilities; documents findings relevant to patients healthcare status or plan of care, documents accurately and consistentlyin accordance with approved policies/procedures. Prioritizes anddocuments patient incoming phone calls, as assigned, regardingmedications, medical conditions, and reviews with provider asneeded for orders or changes. Cleans and stocks examination roomsand/or other supply areas. Documents all patient care delivered inthe medical record according to the medical center policy.

LPNMinimum Training and Education Requirements:

Graduate from anaccredited Practical Nurse program. Licensed as an LPN within thestate of South Carolina or a compact state. Current American HeartAssociation (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification orAmerican Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification isrequired
