Videos Duties Duties:

Utilizes glucose monitoring machine to receive glucose readings for veterans refers deviion to approprie health care staff. Provides direct care for complex veterans. Makes observions of subtle changes in resident’s condition, i.e. behavior shifts, mood, skin coloring, appetite, etc. and takes action accordingly within the NA’s assigned role. Documents care given, observions and responses on approprie tools or forms. Responds appropriely to subtle pient changes by contacting the approprie nursing personal. Administers complete tracheostomy care, including suctioning. Monitor and documents pient intake and output reports deviions timely and accurely. Performs nursing procedures within scope of practice and according to policies and standard procedures to care for the veteran for such procedures but not limited to: enemas, cheterizion, colostomy care, skin care simple dressing , applicion of braces and prosthetic devices. Works on small group activities with veterans/residents according to the pients/resident trement plan. Recognizes the residents’ autonomy and promotes independence by means of respect, limit setting and individualized trement. Actively participes in Trement Planning Meetings. Utilizes equipment to promote the veteran self-care, such as; lift equipment, Hydro sound Tubs, and Veteran/Resident Wandering System. Verbally provides pient informion to the trement team for inclusion in the veteran/residents’ plan of care, participes in trement team meetings for resident care planning. Enters informion about the residents’ condition in the chart, utilizing approprie forms.

One year above high school with courses reled to the NA occupion. Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupion-reled course of study of less than one year as a nursing assistant may also meet in full the experience requirements for GS-3. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfhering Provision as described in the VA Qualificion Standard for this occupion (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupion and meet the criteria). Part-Time Experience. Part-time experience as a Nursing Assistant is creditable according to its relionship to the full-time workweek. For example, a Nursing Assistant employed 20 hours a week, or on a 1/2-time basis, would receive 1 full-time workweek of credit for each 2 weeks of service.

Preferred Experience:

This position includes preferred experience in the form of an Associes or Bachelor’s Degree, 2-5 Years of recent medical/surgical nursing Assistant Experience and/or 2/5 years recent direct pient care experience. Nursing Assistant:

(a) Experience. One year of specialized experience as a Nursing Assistant or experience in another medical field (licensed practical nurse, health technician, hospital corpsman, etc.), performing technical and nursing skills requiring knowledge of the human physical and emotional stes, therapeutic communicion, and technical skills required for basic and intermedie trements. OR, (b) Educion. Successful completion of 2 years above high school in an accredited institution with courses reled to nursing care, health care or in a field of study approprie to the specializion of the position, such as educion in a program for psychology, psychiric, or opering room technicians. AND (c) Demonstred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs). In addition, the candide must demonstre the following

KSAs:

1. Ability to provide a range of pient/resident care and contribute to the completion of the nurse care plan and recovery of pients/residents 2. Ability to observe pients/residents’ or residents’ physical or emotional stus and refer deviions and/or problems to supervisor in a timely manner. 3. Ability to properly use equipment, merials and supplies in simple diagnostic and trement procedures such as bladder scan, continuous passive motion device, blood glucose monitoring machine, specimen collection, etc. 4. Ability to communice effectively with pients/residents, their families and other health professionals. GS-5 Nursing Assistant (Full Performance Level): (a) Experience. One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level which demonstres knowledge, skills, and abilities th are directly reled to the specific assignment. 1. Ability to assist in the full range of nursing care to pients/residents with physical and/or behavioral problems in a hospital, long term care or outpient setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Vocional Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse. 2. Ability to communice orally with pients/residents, families, interdisciplinary team and other personnel. This includes serving as a preceptor to new Nursing Assistant by assisting with the coordinion of their oriention and overseeing/assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting. 3. Ability to recognize and react to emergent pient/resident care situions and intervene while waiting for assistance. For example, recognizing need for basic life support, controlling bleeding, and assisting with behavior crisis, etc.

Physical Requirements:

See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. The populion of male and female veterans served ranges from adult, age 18, to the elderly adult, age 65 and over. The VA Medical center is a major interdisciplinary teaching facility, serving medical, surgical, and neurological inpients and outpients. There is a large outpient psychiric populion, with admissions for medical co-morbidities. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continues walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring pients and objects may be required. The Nursing Assistant may be exposed to infected pients and contamined merials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolion situions or operive/invasive procedures. The Nursing Assistant may occasionally be exposed to pients who are combive secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiric disorders. The Nursing Assistant must be capable of working effectively in stressful situions, able to shift priorities based on pient needs.
