Reporting to the Program Coordinator, this position’s primary role is providing postsecondary comprehensive transition level instruction designed to encourage, support, and enable the success of students with intellectual disabilities. This position will be responsible for direct instruction, assessment of student performance, curriculum design, preparation of course-related materials, selection of textbooks and other course-related materials, maintenance of class records, reporting on student performance, collaborating with and coaching traditional college faculty and other duties typically and traditionally associated with college faculty positions.
Examples of Duties Essential Functions/Duties:
Serves as a primary instructor for Empower to Employ (EMP) core courses in independent living, employability, self-advocacy, and self-determination skills. Develops and implements course curriculum. Knowledge of best practices for instructing students with intellectual disabilities, including universal design for learning. Updates and maintains course content in the learning management system. Leads weekly individual and small group meetings with students to prepare them for workforce success, develop virtual portfolios, and review their checklist goals and progress. Teaches course objectives in accordance with published course descriptions, schedules, procedures, and course outlines. Works with other instructors and staff to review, produce, and/or select course-related materials. Conducts on-going evaluation of student progress and maintains records of student course/class performance. Prepares Standards of Academic Progress and other reports on student engagement as required. Participates in class schedule development and organizing class activities. Supports departmental goals and plans of action to achieve them. Supervises student learning as assigned and appropriate in the classroom, campus co-curricular spaces, and field experiences. Serves as liaison for Faculty Classroom Partners and assists with the development of personalized rubrics. Provides weekly academic tutoring for students. Participates on the STAR Planning Process Team. Supports the and Faculty Ambassadors in creating professional development opportunities and materials. Participates in ongoing professional development. Serves on at least one of the College’s committees, or on an officially established work group or ad hoc committee each year in the spirit of professional responsibility. Mentors new, adjunct, or contract instructors as appropriate.
Typical Qualifications Required Skills:
Extensive knowledge of the subject area(s) in which the individual is responsible for instruction. Knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of effective communication and of effective instruction with students with intellectual disabilities. Knowledge and understanding of the characteristics of students with intellectual disabilities. Knowledge and understanding of division, College and State rules, regulations, and practices as they impact faculty, students, and instruction. Ability to make and to communicate effectively evaluative judgments about student performance. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with students, faculty, staff, and external partners Required Education Master’s degree in Exceptional Student Education (ESE) or a related field or a Master’s degree with 18 graduate credits in ESE or a related field. Teaching certification in ESE (K-12). Required Experience Two years’ experience teaching students with intellectual disabilities. Two years’ experience in curriculum development. Preferred Experience Five years’ experience teaching students with intellectual disabilities. Experience in a postsecondary transition program.
