Job Description Casual Assistant Clinical Instructor (RN)

  • School of Nursing (Harrisburg) /n /n
Purpose:

A nursingprofessional who has the authority, responsibility andaccountability for the clinical instruction of students at theSchools of Nursing at UPMC. The position requires clinicalcompetence as a professional nurse and the ability to instruct,guide and evaluate nursing students during the provision of nursingcare to patients during clinical practicum experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Reflects a commitment to nursing, theschool and the program goals. Explores creative and innovativeteaching learning strategies during conference and on the clinicalunit. Serves as a professional role model for students in theclinical area. Works cooperatively with other faculty members toachieve school goals. /n
  • Works cooperatively and productively toachieve the school goals in accordance with the mission and valuesof the parent organization.

Maintains open communication with otherhealth care team members to achieve academic and organizationalgoals. Understands how the concepts of trust, respect,professionalism and caring are utilized to build an organizationalclimate that fosters the development of the student. Appliesprinciples of dignity and respect in meeting the diverse learningneeds of students in clinical practice. Resolves and managesconflict effectively and in a timely manner. Creates an environmentwhich recognizes and values differences in students, peers,patients, families and communities. Coaches students on culturaldiversity and civility in the educational environment. /n

  • Modelscritical and reflective thinking in the clinical area.

Utilizesinformation technology skillfully to support the teaching learningprocess. Demonstrates interest and respect for learners throughmentoring and knowledge sharing. Provides quality instruction togroups of students in the clinical area utilizing teaching learningconcepts reflective of best practice in nursing education. Providestimely, thoughtful and constructive feedback and evaluations tolearners. Establishes and maintains positive, caring relationshipswith students, faculty, management, patients/families and all othermembers of the health care team. Works productively and effectivelywithin a complex educational environment. Creates meaningfulclinical learning assignments based on student learning needs.

Demonstrates sound clinical judgment with critical thinking,analytical and problem-solving abilities required as related tovarious aspects of the teaching-learning process. Utilizes criticalthinking skills necessary to lead students in the application ofthe nursing process in the clinical area. /n

  • Demonstratescommitment to lifelong learning as evidenced by continuous formaland informal education.

Participates in self-review by criticallyanalyzing strengths, areas for improvement in relation toperformance as a clinical instructor. Receives and utilizesconstructive feedback to improve clinical teaching. Demonstratesclinical competence in order to provide the highest quality ofclinical instruction for nursing students. /n

  • Utilizes researchand evidence-based practice to support improvement in clinicalteaching. Assesses student performance to ensure care reflectsevidenced based nursing practice. Shares outcomes from improvementprojects with other faculty and schools of nursing. /n /n
  • BSNrequired 3 years of clinical practice, required /n
  • Preceptingexperience required; clinical teaching experience in prelicensureprogram preferred /n
  • Must be enrolled in an MSN program with a3-year completion plan /n
  • Appointment to this position andretention of this position is contingent upon the approval of thePA State Board of Nursing.
Licensure, Certifications, andClearances:

/n

  • Current Pennsylvania licensure as a RegisteredProfessional Nurse. /n
  • CPR Certification for BLS for Health CareProviders. /n
  • Have Act 33, 34 and 73 (FBI) clearances. /n
  • Appointment to this position and retention of this position iscontingent upon the approval of the PA State Board of Nursing. /n
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didacticand skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire /n
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) /n
  • Registered Nurse (RN) /n
  • Act 33 with renewal /n
  • Act 34 withrenewal /n
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal /n /n
  • Currentlicensure either in the state where the facility is located or, ifthe facility is in a state covered by the multistate NursingLicensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by aparticipating NLC state.

Hires and current employees working on anout-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to thestate where the facility is also located will have 60 days uponchanging their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
