The RN Clinical Charge Nurseis responsible for directing and overseeing the daily activities ofthe unit on an assigned shift to assure successful safe delivery ofcare. The Charge Nurse is a caregiver and often takes modifiedpatient care assignment. They practice in a clinical environmentthat is administered by Nurse Managers and other leaders and issupported through the WellStar Shared Governance Model. Theframework for practice is steered by the WellStar ProfessionalNursing Practice Model and evidence based practice and research. RNcompetencies are derived from these models and supported by theWellStar Core Competencies.

The RN Clinical Charge Nurse is aproactive member of an interdisciplinary team of licensed andunlicensed care givers who ensure that patients, families andsignificant others receive individualized high quality, safepatient care.

Expectations of practice include:

accountability;responsibility and authority for the practice of nursing; effectiveteamwork; delegation; communication; respect; personal development;and development of team members.

The role contributes to theestablishment and maintenance of practices that ensure excellencein patient care, provides for the efficient use of resources, andundertakes leadership task such as staff schedules, unit patientflow, subject matter expertise for clinical concerns, physicianrounding, committee involvement, survey readiness, and other taskas assigned by the manager, which are basic to the department’sability to function in a smooth and effective manner.

The RNClinical Charge Nurse is a resource to other areas opportunity tolearn about operational functionality and hospital/facilityawareness. He/she is assists in the growth and development of teammembers in the unit to help build department skills sets and toinspire expertise. This leader brings with him or her ability tobuild rapport between nurses and physicians to continue service tothe patients and is a role model to others.

It is expected that allRN Clinical Charge Nurses are licensed, knowledgeable and upholdthe practice of nursing as outlined by the Georgia ProfessionalNurse Practice Act and implements the Scope of Practice and Code ofEthics Standards put forth by the American Nurses Association. As amember of the patient services team, it is expected the individualupholds the voice of the patient, system policies and procedureswhile supporting service excellence goals. She/he possesses(advanced) clinical expertise and utilizes this expertise tosupport and promote the delivery of safe, age appropriate andculturally aware patient care and serves as a partner in care.

CoreResponsibilities and Essential Functions:

Resources and Support

  • Monitors equipment inventory, location and utilization to ensurestaff have tools and equipment needed to perform their job.
  • Participates in planning and requesting resources for providinghigh quality care and assists in acquiring appropriate staffingduring unexpected staffing shortages or surges in census.
  • Proactively plans for the care of patients across the carecontinuum in the course of giving direct patient care.

Participatesin the development of protocols and procedures when called upon orthrough self-initiation in collaboration with care managers andother members of the health care team to achieve best practiceoutcomes (i.e., decrease in re-admission rates; avoidable days;adverse events; etc).Tactical Responsibilities

  • Make PatientAssignments.
  • Consideration for new grads, float and type ofpatient.
  • Daily Discharge/Length of Stay Review.
  • Round withPhysicians/Surgeons.
  • Assign Surgery Beds In Conjunction withSurgery Schedule.
  • Consult with Supervisor Nursing Administration(House Supervisor) on Bed Flow and Availability.
EmergencyServices:

Assignments for sections, manage waiting room, multipleareas open at different times.

Exemplary Practice and Outcomes

  • Rounds on every patient daily to evaluate quality andappropriateness of patient care including corrective action whenneeded utilizing peer coaching and accountability.
  • Performs orprovides oversight for the Nursing Process (assessment; diagnosis;identification of outcomes; planning; implementation andevaluation) in the performance of clinical care using evidence basepractice; analytical/critical thinking insuring that care isindividualized; coordinating care through effective partnerships;caring is central to achieve optimal patient care outcomes.
  • Provides or provides oversight for relationship based care deliverypatient-centered care by partnering with the patient andsignificant others (as appropriate) using comprehensive hand-offcommunication processes; interdisciplinary evaluation andcommunication (i.

e., unit rounds, case reviews, peer review, etc.);just in time and planned patient teaching; keeping the patientinformed using appropriate communication tools and making thepatients goals the focus of the plan of care.

  • Practices usingcurrent clinical practice standards with a focus on safety andquality .
  • Within the
Emergency Department Setting:

Charge Nurserounds on patients in a modified method in conjunction with nursesto focus on patient safety concerns and patient care.

Teamwork andCollaboration

  • Communicates with nurse manager and/or assistantnurse manager any needs or concerns pertaining to care delivery oremployee performance.
  • Coordinates the delivery and documentationof safe quality patient care which includes promotion ofinterdisciplinary communication and regular interdisciplinaryplanning/rounds; completion of timely documentation and promotionof a respectful, inclusive clinical environment (Interdisciplinaryrounds do not apply in the Emergency Services setting).
  • Demonstrates teamwork and collaboration by practicing in a mannerthat is fiscally responsible and promotes the recruitment andretention of all healthcare team members.
  • Participates andsupports performance improvement inclusive of all stakeholders,research and research utilization to promote safe, quality patientcare including initiating and/or leading such activities as wellas, promoting an inter/intra-disciplinary processes and activelysupports/participates in shared governance at all levels in thesystem.

Professional Development

  • Ensures patient/family/staffconfidentiality and corporate compliance for self (andaccountability for team members) requirements including completingall required mandatory education and proficiencies.
  • Serves as apreceptor (or mentor) for other professional nurses (and staff orstudents for all disciplines) to ensure that there is a current andfuture qualified workforce; modeling the professional practice ofnursing and creating a healthy work environment.

  • Promotes Evidence based practice, nursingresearch and performance improvement in nursing. Participates inactivities such as value analysis as part of the decision makingprocess in evaluating patient care products.

Required MinimumEducation:
