Job Description
Charge nurse of the L&D unit is responsible for completing the schedule to meet the nursing and ancillary staffing needs of the unit. The charge nurse will attempt to utilize the available staff in accordance with their employment status agreements. The charge nurse will follow the chain of command and turn in the proposed schedule for review and approval in a timely manner. The charge nurse will work alongside of administration in maintaining the budget of the unit. The charge nurse will oversee the day-to-day activities within the unit, including but not limited to daily correctness and completion of the Delivery book, daily crash cart checks, appropriate stocking of all rooms and updating the House Manager as appropriate for staffing needs or cancelations. The charge nurse will assess the current processes to ensure fiscally sound and efficient use of staff and other resources. The charge nurse can be called upon during her shift to assist in emergent situations or crisis staffing needs. The charge nurse is not to regularly and consistently receive a patient assignment so that she can oversee the needs of the unit as a whole. The charge nurse is to address any staffing deficiencies in attendance, following the policy and procedures as posted, charting, management of supplies and physician communication. The charge nurse is able to teach others when a lack of knowledge is present to help maintain and ensure the growth of the unit.
