Position Overview:

The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM)

  • Behavioral Health supports the daily operations of the behavioral health unit, ensuring the delivery of high-quality care that meets the psychosocial, physical, and restorative needs of patients.

This role collaborates with interdisciplinary teams, provides leadership to staff, and promotes regulatory compliance and quality improvement. The ANM is instrumental in fostering a supportive team environment and promoting professional development.
Compensation is commensurate upon education, experience, certification, and internal equity. Hiring compensation range starts from $40.02 /hour.

02/hour or more (depending on education & experience). Benefits begin the first of the month following 60 days of employment from the new hire orientation date. This position is a non-exempt position.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide leadership and daily operational support for the behavioral health unit.
Collaborate with nursing and interdisciplinary staff to ensure safe, high-quality patient care.
Supervise, coach, and support nursing and behavioral health tech staff in clinical performance.
Ensure adherence to regulatory standards, hospital policies, and clinical best practices.
Facilitate staff development, participate in performance evaluations, and encourage growth opportunities.
Promote a safe and efficient care environment by responding effectively to emergencies and changes in patient condition.
Model professional conduct and teamwork in accordance with UNC Health Appalachian Mission, Vision, and Values.

Position Requirements:
Minimum Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) required.
Master’s degree in Nursing or Healthcare Management preferred.

Experience:

Minimum of 3-5 years of clinical nursing experience in behavioral health or psychiatric nursing.
Previous experience in a leadership or supervisory role is preferred.

Required Registration/License/Certification:

Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).
Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association required at time of hire.
Certification in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing (PMH-BC) or similar is desirable but not required.
Crisis Prevention and Intervention (CPI) certification required and will be completed during orientation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Strong leadership and team management abilities.
Excellent communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
Knowledge of psychiatric disorders and behavioral health interventions.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-stress environment with individuals in crisis.
Familiarity with healthcare regulations, standards, and quality improvement processes.

Physical Demands:

Lifts, positions, pushes, pulls, and/or transfers up to and greater than 50 pounds.
Manual dexterity and mobility.
Prolonged, extensive or considerable sitting/standing/walking.
Bending, squatting, twisting, turning.
Near acuity: ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less.

Working Conditions:

Regularly exposed to the risk of bloodborne diseases.
Frequently exposed to hazards from electrical/mechanical/power equipment; odorous chemicals and specimens; and unpleasant elements (accident, injury, slippery surfaces uneven surfaces), etc.
Subject to irregular hours (days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays); and emergencies.
Continuous standing and walking long periods = to, or, greater than >8 hours per shift.
Speaking, reading, and writing, expanded > 8 hours per day.
Exposed to vibration; cramped spaces >1 hour day.
Frequently mobilizes patients >4 hours per day.
